Conversations with Heather Walther

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Walther.

Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I fell in love with movement, alignment, posture, and anatomy at an early age as a competitive gymnast. When I was no longer competing, I discovered group fitness in high school as a way to satisfy the love of exercise and community I found in sports. This led me to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Missouri – Columbia. As I moved away from treating patients and into the fitness world I grew to love working with fellow athletes and realized there were multiple areas of my training that I wanted to utilize to emphasize the importance of a balanced fitness routine. Because of this, I am a certified yoga instructor and found that my interest in disciplines that still held those values of alignment, posture, and anatomy was fully aligned. I am also trained in Pilates mat and reformer and served as the master instructor for the Dailey Method in St. Louis.

I have been so blessed to be teaching in the fitness industry for over 15 years and my love of exercise, deep interest and respect for anatomy, and passion for teaching are all incorporated when I teach a class. I launched Studio Emerge because I wanted to share my passion for the classes that I love to teach. I have been lucky enough to be an ambassador for Lululemon twice in the last 8 years and they have always pushed me through workshops to set goals and get outside my comfort zone. In a workshop the year before the pandemic hit, I wrote down a goal to create my own brand. In the past, I always thought I would have a brick-and-mortar business, but throughout my years of experience, I realized that an online business would allow me to pursue my passion while still maintaining balance with my family life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I truly love owning my own business and creating workouts I hope will empower those taking my classes, but it also means I deeply feel every victory and every loss. I can feel the highest of highs and the lowest of lows all in one day. I try to always remind myself that success is not going to happen overnight and that my classes cannot be a perfect fit for everyone. I just hope I’m able to reach those that will benefit from the classes and hope the classes will give them what they need to accomplish amazing things.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Studio Emerge is an online studio with over 100 on demand fitness classes. The classes include sculpt, yoga, and recovery. The sculpt classes use a mix of equipment and your own body weight at a moderate to advanced intensity level to build strength and muscular endurance. The yoga classes take an athletic approach with a focus on strength and flexibility while always incorporating breath. The yoga stretch classes are great for all levels and use yoga poses to improve mobility. The recovery classes incorporate the use of myofascial release tools to release tension and improve movement and are appropriate for all levels.

I use my training in physical therapy, yoga, pilates, and barre to influence the classes. The sculpt and yoga classes are intended to be challenging and mindful with a priority on alignment and posture. I hope my background in physical therapy helps set the classes apart from others and participants can walk away feeling like they had a great workout and know they were moving in a safe and efficient way.

I am truly motivated to create classes that will be worth your time and leave you feeling like you can tackle whatever you have ahead of you.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
As hard as it is, try not to compare yourself to others. There is only one you. Believe in the gifts that only you bring to the table and be ok if everything isn’t perfect. Keep your focus on your product and what you are passionate about, and remember that good things take time. It’s not going to happen overnight.
