Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerel Canty.
Jerel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Jerel Canty and I am a photographer and cinematographer based in the Greater St. Louis Area. I was born and raised in the Metro East, just outside of St. Louis. In 2013, I graduated from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE) with a Studio Art-Photography degree.
During my youth, I would always have a love and fascination with photography, movies, and general artwork. On family trips and at family parties, I would use a polaroid camera my mother had given me to take photos. All throughout my school years, I’ve always loved all forms of art. Ever since college, my main focus through the craft of photography is meant to expand and reach into creating visual narratives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting out was the self-doubt asking myself could I be good at this. After putting myself out there, I met a group of people that inspired me by giving me the opportunity to meet them on the weekends to do photoshoots. From these meet-ups, it became a group of collaboration where we would bounce ideas off of each other.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For the past three years, I have been a pharmacy technician at a hospital in the St. Louis area. In all of my spare time is devoted and dedicated to schedule photoshoots, scout areas that interest to take photos, fly my drone, take photos consistently, edit photos and video, market, promote and advertise my craft through my website and social media. Some of it is work-related and I do this out of pure enjoyment and fulfillment.
I specialize in aesthetic landscape and architectural photography, help models build their portfolios, real estate photography, and cinematography. I consistently post to my website and social media outlets. What I am most proud of is my vision of seeing a visual setting, showing it to an audience and having them mentally place themselves into the photo. I currently sell photographic prints, photo puzzles, self-published a photo book of my favorite photos that I have taken and currently working on a second book. Along with that, I have been featured in local community Instagram features, being a part of two TrapXArt St. Louis Shows, and having three photos be a part of the “Black Nonpareil” Art Show in the Angad Arts Hotel. What sets me apart is my consistency in expanding the craft to inspire, motivate and positively influence other artists and creatives. Please take a look at my website www.jerelcanty.com and from my website, it will link to my social media outlets.
