Today we’d like to introduce you to Starr Coburn
Hi Starr, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was the quiet kid who often went unnoticed. I didn’t like to talk much, so I found comfort in writing my thoughts and feelings in my diary. My family loved movies, and we often had movie nights. I would get completely absorbed in the stories on screen, but once the movie ended, I always wanted to know more. I realized there was always more to a story than what we saw.
This curiosity led me to start crafting my own stories. I would watch award ceremonies and imagine myself walking the stage to accept an award for the best film of the year. After doing some research, I discovered that I could turn my stories into published works. In 2014, I published my first book, The Ironworker’s Wife.
I went on to write additional books that highlight trades often overlooked, such as the Amazing Ironworkers Series. I wrote books to inspire girls to see themselves differently, such as Pretty Girl: Change the Way You See You, which inspired the Pretty Girl Summit: Selfie Party movement. I took a break from writing to help others tell their stories.
To further this mission, I started my publishing company, Starr Elite Publishing, to give writers a space to express themselves without worrying about their educational background. We are all storytellers; it just takes the right person to help turn those stories into a book.
As I travel the world with my husband, I am able to share my story and help others tell theirs. We don’t often see ourselves represented, and I wanted to change that. It’s been an incredible journey, turning my childhood passion for storytelling into a fulfilling career.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No journey is without hurdles, even when the path seems clear. The biggest hurdle I faced was believing in my own ability to succeed, especially without knowing anyone who could guide me along the way. I reached out to agents with inquiry letters, hoping for a chance, but faced a series of rejections or no responses at all. My grammar wasn’t perfect; during college, my English composition teacher often gave me A-minuses or B-pluses, praising my writing but critiquing my grammar. At times, I felt as though you needed a Ph.D. to write a book. I learned that there is a solution to every problem; for me, it was finding an editor. I reached out to editors to help me push my dream of publishing a book. If you can’t do something, find someone who can; if you can’t find anyone, learn how to do it yourself. Nothing is impossible. My resilience and faith in God helped me accomplish my goals. I have published over 20 books.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in crafting stories that have the power to transform lives. My work is centered around encouraging individuals to become the best versions of themselves and pushing them to realize their full potential.I’m also recognized for my ability to include and relate to people regardless of their background or past experiences.
One of my greatest sources of pride is overcoming my own obstacles, which has enabled me to guide others through their challenges. I believe God has given me a unique gift for connecting with people on a deep level, often leading them to share their most personal thoughts and feelings with me. It’s common for them to say, “I don’t know why I just told you that,” after opening up. This ability to connect profoundly helps me assist them in telling their stories effectively.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years, I see the storytelling industry evolving with a surge in diverse and impactful narratives. More stories will be shared, reflecting a wide range of experiences and perspectives. This shift will likely be driven by the increasing demand for authentic and inclusive content.
The Pretty Girl Summit is set to play a transformative role in the realm of personal development and empowerment. As it expands into a nationwide event, it will serve as a powerful platform for uplifting young girls around the globe. By fostering self-love, setting high standards, and nurturing belief in their own capabilities, the Summit will inspire a new generation to realize their potential and achieve their dreams. Moreover, its focus on empowerment and positive growth is expected to contribute to a decrease in bullying, substance abuse, and other negative behaviors, creating a more supportive and resilient community for young girls.
In addition, I plan to organize a summit for young men as well. Recognizing that everyone needs nurturing, encouragement, and someone to believe in them, this event will aim to provide similar support and empowerment to young men, helping them thrive and reach their potential. I firmly believe that it takes a village to create a thriving community where everyone is positioned to win.
