Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy & Harley James.
Hi Amy & Harley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Petaled Pail & Company began as a flower farm. After being outsourced from the corporate world, I took a blind leap into entrepreneurship. We began as a small flower farm growing herbs and specialty cut flowers. After graduating from North Carolina State University (with a degree in nutrition), my daughter joined me as a business partner. We quickly found our niche in wedding and event floral design alongside everyday flowers and subscriptions. Today we’ve transitioned from an operating farm to a bustling wedding design house, offering complete wedding and event styling & design, floral design, and planning/coordination services while keeping close to our roots with everyday flowers and flower subscriptions.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well, there was Covid. Entering 2020, we were beginning to hit our stride when we shut down the wedding and hospitality industry (and the world around us), thankfully, as our events were being postponed. The masses were moving their offices into their extra bedrooms and basements at home and needed flower subscriptions for their home offices. That was our most significant struggle and unanticipated shift so far. Otherwise, we’ve been fortunate only to endure the typical growing pains and a few others associated with wearing all of the hats and learning as we grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We design, style, and flower the most beautifully detailed wedding days for our couples. Our specialty is finding the perfect place where our client’s vision intersects our romantic garden design style, incorporating the details that tell their love story and bringing that to life for them and their guests. It’s important to us that everyone in attendance walks away with memories that will last a lifetime, not only the bride and groom.
What are we known for? That’s a difficult one to answer. I hope we’re known for our creativity, love of what we do, and attention to detail that we pour into our work. I also think we’re known for being a mother-daughter team that loves working together every day and the relationships that we’re building with our clients. Many of which last beyond the 12+ months we’re working together to plan and design their wedding day. They’re now contacting us for baby shower designs, birthday parties for their children, and anniversary parties. Wedding days are very intimate, personal affairs. We don’t take that for granted and are thankful for the opportunity to have a hand in theirs.
We’re most proud of how far we’ve come and where we are today! Petaled Pail & Company was started from seed and grown by our design. We have not strayed from our standards or vision of what we want to become. We’re not quite there yet and are enjoying the process of following our dreams.
Hopefully, our designs and perfect wedding days stand out in the crowded wedding industry. We consider ourselves an “in-house design team” because we’re not traditional florists. We’re certainly happy to exclusively be the floral design team for a wedding or event, but where we shine the most is with complete styling and design. We’re starting with a clean slate, designing all aspects of the day, incorporating intimate details using elements like florals, fabrics, textures, signage, stationery, etc., and collaborating with other vendor friends to create a truly dreamy day for our clients. Every couple has a love story. We want to tell them.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
There is a surge in our industry now, as we’re coming out of a pandemic. Everyone is ready to gather and celebrate. I think that feeling will continue for the foreseeable future. Lockdown and isolation from friends and familly will not be easily forgotten. I feel like Covid did a great job of reminding everyone of the importance of sharing special moments and celebrating with friends and family.
