Daily Inspiration: Meet Coffee The Terrier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Coffee The Terrier.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Our names are Diane Francis and Katherine Francis (my daughter), and Coffee is our dog! Coffee is a pitbull-terrier mix with a brown coat and hazel eyes. She was adopted from Stray Rescue of St. Louis in September 2019 at the age of 1 year old. Coffee was originally going to be a companion dog for a friend of the family who is a Veteran for emotional support. We had planned to be her co-owners while she lived with him full time. Unfortunately, after caring for her for a couple of months, our friend had to leave town and couldn’t take her with him. We didn’t want Coffee to have to go through being in a shelter again. Therefore, we had to prepare to keep Coffee full time. Although we have never planned to have a dog due to our work and school schedules, we couldn’t imagine not having her here with us. We’ve had to learn so much about dogs and how to properly care for them. There is such a stigma around adopting Pitbulls and we want to change that. Pitbulls are one of the best dog breeds you can have. They are very loyal and caring dogs even though they are very much mistreated in society.

We also ended up learning a lot more about Coffee too. Coffee has a lot of unique characteristics. For example, the shelter put in her profile that she always looks back when you are walking behind her to make sure that you’re still there. Her original name that was listed at the shelter was “Comfy”. She was given this name because of how the rescuers detailed that she got very comfortable right away in the car after being rescued from the streets. Even when we brought her home, she climbed up and laid right down on the couch instead of the floor! She always has to find some way to be close to you. She is also very vocal. When she doesn’t get her way, she will let you know it. Her name was eventually changed to Coffee after we realized she was brown and not gray when looking at her adoption papers. The name just seemed to fit her.

We also found out more about her rescue. After searching the animal shelter’s Facebook page, we discovered that she was extremely neglected and was in a bad condition when the rescuers found her in 2019. Her ears were covered in fly bites and looked very painful. Although we do not know the extent of her rescue, we believe she was abused in some way by her past owners. Her rescue post received hundreds of likes and comments with prayers in hopes that her ears would heal and that she would go to a loving family soon. Thankfully, that is exactly what happened!

Now two years after her adoption, Coffee is still with us and has just turned three years old on June 11, 2021. We threw her a party with dog-safe peanut butter ice cream and cake to celebrate not only her birthday but the 2nd anniversary of her rescue! Adopting a dog has changed so much in our lives and we hope more people decide to do the same!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At first, we struggled with adjusting to having a dog in our family. Coffee has a lot of energy and is very reactive towards other dogs and people. So, we’ve had to come up with a solution in our busy schedules to keep her active. Due to her being a stray, she is not used to a lot of things. Being introduced to new people or places can be hard for her sometimes. When she meets you, she just wants to jump up on you. We would love to get her properly trained but due to costs, we have taught her a lot by ourselves. Health-wise, we have also struggled with getting her the best care for her ears. It has been a challenge finding affordable care for her at times. Nevertheless, Coffee is still very healthy and is doing just fine.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Diane Francis – I am a recent retiree of eight months. Before dedicating my time to becoming a dog owner, I worked as an administrative assistant for the St Louis Public School District for 20 years and decided to retire during the Pandemic. I am known for and most proud of my ability to write inspirational poetry. My poems are spiritually based focusing on the truth of God’s Word. I particularly love writing poetry to uplift the broken-hearted due to the loss of a loved one. I was put to the test when I wrote a poem in honor of my mother and recited it at her funeral. Although It was a sad moment in my life, I fulfilled a promise to my mother. This is something I will never forget. What sets me apart from others is my ability to free flow poetry. Words just come to me in a poetic flow.

Katherine Francis – I am currently a college student majoring in Business Administration. Also, in my spare time, I am a blogger. I started my blog called “Kadiskreations” to showcase my love for fashion, music, and culture. I also have an interest in social media management. This is how I came up with the idea of creating an Instagram account for Coffee. It was originally made just for fun but now I am taking it more seriously. I enjoy creating interesting content for others to enjoy and I am proud of all the positive feedback it has gotten!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to us is to be thankful to God for all that He has given us. Also, to live life to the fullest with our family, friends, and of course Coffee!
