Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Terry.
Hi Daniel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The idea of starting a clothing brand began in the fall of 2019 when starting a clothing brand seemed to become a trend on social media. I asked friends and family, some said yes and some said no. But deep down, I felt that I could take my own personal beliefs and mindset and push that agenda via clothing, therefore making the company more than just clothing, but “a lifestyle.” I officially began designing and brainstorming different logos in December of 2019 and finally came up with a logo and the name – “Pure Hustle Group.”
As time went along, I came to believe that the current name and logo both were not universal or catchy enough. From there, I decided to dig even deeper into my lifestyle as a young black college student who was involved in extracurriculars and played sports all of his life. In the spring of 2020 (midst of the COVID-19 outbreak), a new name for the brand came to mind. “OverGrind Clothing LLC” was made official on May 30, 2020, speaking to the underlying lifestyle of Daniel Terry – President of fraternity (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Mu Tau Chapter), Administrative Liaison for Truman State University’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion, CEO of OverGrind Clothing, CEO of Paper Pusha Enterprises (Business Coaching & Makrketing Agency), and being a full time college student. I was not living the normal life of 19 year old but rather, as some would say, “overbooked” or “too involved”. On the other hand, I saw it as fully dedicating and investing my time towards a future life that I desired. OverGrind means to give your all at all times, fully understanding the detrimental value of any and all distractions. These distractions may include family, friends, bad habits, bad relationships, poor time management, etc. OverGrind refers to a lifestyle of focus and determination until you reach your goals. It does not involve fatigue, inconsistency, laziness, or any other set of excuses. OverGrind Clothing is a brand that targets underserved communities (in which me, my family, and many of my friends grew up in) to inspire and motivate to exceed their potential, in a way that: teaches a lifestyle of determination and focus; while also ensuring a our customers a quality purchasing experience.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have run into severe issues with manufacturing, shipping, and social media marketing to just name a few. No, it has not been a smooth road whatsoever. But, I understood that before I decided to go down this road! I truly believe that I am working within the purpose that God has for me. Knowing that I am not necessarily impacted by all of the downsides as others may think. When you are in your own lane, there really is not much traffic. It is when you try to live a life that is not for you, when obstacles may seem like an endpoint. You were never meant to be on this path in the first place. Everything I come across as a business owner is either a blessing or a lesson! There is no stopping the success of OverGrind, and the name of the brand and company truly speaks for itself.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Professionally, I currently am a two-year intern at the Boeing Company as a Financial Analyst in Cost & Financial Structure Management. On the other hand, I have been known for being an entrepreneur and hustler since elementary school. From a young age, I always valued hard work and ambition. Being the CEO and founder of OverGrind Clothing is professional. Being the CEO and founder of Paper Pusha Enterprises is professional. I now understand that the term “professional” is only used to set apart the employee versus boss mindset. I want all reading this to know that you are more than capable of accomplishing anything you want to in life! I run my businesses at my own discretion, and I will lead them both to success here in the near future as I have my goals set and the dedication to meet them.
What are your plans for the future?
My future plans consist of working at Boeing and continuously investing in OverGrind with huge plans for expansion. OverGrind has already entered the athletics realm with football training. Next up, OverGrind basketball will make its debut in Fall 2021 as well. In addition to athletics, we as a company are looking to launch our first storefront and a training facility within the next 2-3 years. Proper planning, execution, and marketing will all play huge roles in our plans.
