Daily Inspiration: Meet Joye Forrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joye Forrest.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started competing in pageants when I was 17. I quickly realized how pageants help woman blossom, make positive change in their community, and help them find their voice.

I love being in a part of a positive competition atmosphere where your competitors are constantly lifting you up, and that is what pushed me to continue my journey for the past 8 years.

In 2015 I was crowned the first African American Miss Missouri Teen United States and May of this year, I was awarded the title of Miss Missouri USA 2021.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
With any major competition, there will only be one winner. I didn’t win right away, but every competition made me stronger and taught me something about myself. Because of this learning journey, I was able to turn my weaknesses into strength and lean on my family, community, and most importantly God.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been dancing since the age of 3, and my career really started right here in the heart of the city, at COCA! I was able to study and perform with Debbie Allen, Alvin Ailey, and Dance Theatre of Harlem.

From there I received my bachelor’s from The California Institute of The Arts, and went on to dance professionally in 9 countries and as a Los Angeles Laker Girl!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Don’t take anything or anyone for granted. We must enjoy the journey we are on and continue to live life the fullest we can. Tomorrow is not promised so we have to live for today.
