Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Schmid-Falter.
Hi Melanie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After high school, I started my “professional” life with a gap year and a following trip to Bali. Nice! As I returned, I got smacked with reality: bills to pay, shitty weather, and no idea what I would want to do with myself. So my parents signed me up for a degree in Business Information Systems, essentially a mix between business and informatics (lol). I then graduated and started a very well-paying job in a software start-up.
That wasn’t for me, though. So I quit and went to Thailand. As you can tell, history repeats itself. I got back, and reality hit me again. This time though, I had gained valuable knowledge and way more ambition. I knew I wouldn’t return to an office soon, but I also wanted to do something meaningful with my life. I had grown up. So, I put a sh*it ton of work into my online portfolio and worked with different clients on their websites and online businesses. And I loved it!
Supporting local businesses with their visions and bringing concepts to life is amazing! Over time, I created, maintained, and optimized many websites and shops while building a fundamental understanding of small businesses’ digital marketing and online representations. So, right now, I live part-time in St. Louis with my boyfriend (an STL local) and part-time in a small town in the Bavarian Alps (my hometown). Even though I’m barely making enough money to get by, my job allows me to travel back and forth pretty frequently, which, at this point in my life, matters most 😉
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles included: a long time I couldn’t travel to the states or anywhere else due to covid and being unable to see my boyfriend for over 7 months, financial pressure, personal conflicts about meaningfulness, and finding + loving myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create websites that reflect the character of a brand. This could be the hard-working small business owner who puts their heart and soul into their products or services but has no idea about tech or its business side. This could also be the established business surprised by the pandemic and had to move 100% digital from one day to another. I find a lot of meaning in supporting small businesses to make their lives easier in any way I can. This usually includes: their websites, shops, social media channels, google analytics, google business manager, a marketing strategy, and an overall matching design.
How do you define success?
Being financially free and at the same time proud of your work.
