Daily Inspiration: Meet Shannon Conner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Conner.

Hi Shannon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I moved to the St. Louis area about 13 years ago from southern California. I was out there for school and had started working in my field of fashion design. I quickly realized that was not the career path I wanted to be on, so when I moved to the mid-west to be with my now-husband, I was looking for something new.

He was a photographer, a few years into his business, and since that was something I also enjoyed I threw myself into learning all about the technical side of photography as well as running a small business. We primarily shot weddings initially, and for many years that was all we did. Then we decided we were ready to start building our family, and I wanted to have a boudoir photoshoot to capture my body in all its pre-baby glory! I had my session on a trip back to California to visit friends, and I fell in LOVE.

I absolutely loved how I felt during the shoot, getting my hair and makeup done, feeling like a model, seeing my photos, and realizing I looked like a model! I immediately told Joel, “I want to start offering this to our brides!” So we did. I was still fairly inexperienced in photography, so for the first few years, we always shot together. We were still mostly shooting weddings, but I loved when I got to do boudoir photos for someone.

There were two big game-changers for us, that shifted the trajectory of the business. The first was having our second child. Realizing that my time was going to be much more limited and that once they got into school weekends were going to be pretty precious, I set up a five-year plan to be primarily shooting boudoir and out of weddings by the time they were both in school.

The second event that propelled me forward was, you guessed it, the pandemic. With weddings and events being shut down, downsized, and postponed, it was time to make a shift. So through the last 2+ years, I’ve made LaFleur Boudoir my primary focus and have had the privilege of photographing over 200 women in that time alone.

I get so excited when I get to make a client’s eyes light up (or tear up) as she says, “I can’t believe that’s me” or “I can’t believe I like so many. I never like pictures of myself”. It is like having the best day, every day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been challenges. Building a business while raising young kids is a whole, special kind of challenge! As moms, our focus and priority are always split.

Before we had kids being able to throw as much of our time and energy into building our wedding business as we needed was easy. When you have little people who you love more than anything in the whole world and are responsible for keeping alive – LOL – it is not as straightforward.

But overall, I feel that has made me able to relate to my clients that much more because so many of them are moms juggling careers and raising kids too.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer, and I specialize in boudoir photography. If you are not familiar with Boudoir it is simply intimate female portraiture. I am most proud of the impact that I get to make in the lives of so many women around me, most of whom I would have never otherwise known.

Boudoir photography has certainly become much more prevalent and known than when I started. What sets me apart is first and foremost, my genuine belief that every woman – regardless of her age, size, or season of life – has beauty inside her that is waiting to come out. My passion is helping her discover to not be afraid of it and to embrace the incredible and powerful woman God made her be.

Secondly, because I have photographed hundreds of women there is nothing that is daunting to me. I know how to pose and light every body type to make you look your best. I know what outfits to suggest for your shape. I know what makeup style is going to best accentuate your features.

And I also have a lingerie wardrobe with around a hundred pieces, including Victoria’s Secret style angel wings, that my clients get to use in their sessions if they desire.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Not sure if this was included – but I’m in my early 40s, married for 12 years, and have two elementary-aged children, My husband and I also own Conner Photography and a local coffee shop, Verona Coffee.
