Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Jones.
Brandi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, I would do my hair as a kid to block out the chaos going on in my home. Practice on family or niece to get practice in. In 2010 I told my high school teacher I wanted to be a hairstylist after school and was told I would not make any money doing hair. So, I settled and went to a university and did not care for it. Coming from being a crack baby child, foster care, sexual abuse, and feeling invisible, hair was all that brought happiness to me and uplifting people around me. I ended up going to cosmetology school after a year at a university and loved it. I felt like I was where I actually belonged. I graduated and worked at a few salons about 4 in total, were two salons tho that taught me a lot besides hair skills but work ethic. I open December 30, 2017, after having my first son 4 months prior! Realizing that my small salon loft was a place for women to come and be filled up with motivation and a word and love. My clients are more0 than clients but family and truly trust me with their problems, even strangers. So that’s when I realized my love for hair and helping uplifting women was right here where I called my business. As in why when I expand it will really be a place for women to relax, unwind, and whatever stress or outside world issues will be left right at the shampoo bowl. My business is my peace and sanctuary and baby girl! Owe it all to God – Jeremiah 29:11
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
December 30, 2017, opened and got pregnant again July 2018 and battling the worst depression of my life I have ever experienced, single mom of not one but two, suffering from suicidal thoughts, anxiety, wanting to give up on my business a few times along the way. Had employees and it did not work out was operating alone ‘till God said it was time again, 2020 hit and a pandemic hit and caused me not to work for 4 months straight no income or anything at all. But it all made me choose to give my life to God and allow him to be the CEO of my business truly. This journey was not easy at all.
As you know, we’re big fans of Hairr By Bee Beauty LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business started in my kitchen and living room for 6yrs and then in 2017 of December 30th, I opened my first physical location. I’m a natural hairstylist located in South City of St. Louis. I specialize in sew-ins and silk presses and Havana twists and make customs bonnets and sell edge control and known for uplifting women I come across soon as they enter the salon. What sets me apart from others is that I’m a Christian faith-based salon. I’m most proud brand-wise of my custom bonnets because I make them with a sewing machine on my own. I travel 45 mins. 6 days a week to work for a business whether I have a client or not. The services I offer is natural styles, natural protective braid styles, silk press is what everyone requests really and my sew-in styles.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for finding a mentor is to ask. Surround yourself with motivating people. Don’t base inspiration off of followers or likes or popularity of a person but based on the words out their mouth and actions. That’s what’s worked for me.
