Exploring Life & Business with Danielle Ivie of Powered by Movement

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Ivie.

Danielle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Southern California and made my way to St. Louis to attend Washington University in St. Louis’ Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Prior to graduate school, I competed as an NCAA Division 1 gymnast at the University of Arizona. As a former collegiate gymnast, I have always been interested in human movement and the incredible resilience of the human body, specifically related to injury and return to performance. I had my fair share of injuries and that definitely sparked my interest in physical therapy. I know firsthand how powerful it is to overcome an injury and get back to the activities you love, and I love helping people do just that.

After graduating from WashU’s DPT program and working for a few years at a traditional clinic I realized, we, as physical therapists, can do so much better. Although everything I was doing at the time was well-intentioned, I felt stuck. I wanted to connect with people in the St. Louis community and form meaningful relationships to really make a difference. I realized that I did not have the time or means to serve the community how I wanted to, and so, Powered by Movement was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This question made me laugh. Anything worth doing is not always easy or “smooth”. The moment I quit my full-time job to pursue this business was terrifying. Throughout school, I had this vision of my career and I was doing exactly what I envisioned, so why did I feel like I needed more? Jumping into unknown waters and leaving behind a secure, stable job sounded absurd when I first said it out loud. But, I’m a trust your gut kind of person, and my gut had already decided.

As a trained healthcare provider, entering the entrepreneurial space is very challenging. They don’t teach Business 101 in medical school so everything is a learning curve when you start a private practice. You try things, see how they go, adjust, and try again. I had to change my mindset very early on to realize that I have all these goals, and they can all be achieved; but, they cannot all be achieved at once. And to tell myself that it is okay to learn, grow and continue to evolve as a business owner. Once you realize that every experience is a learning opportunity, navigating unexpected circumstances or challenges becomes much easier.

Despite the challenges, I have been very fortunate to have amazing support from my family, professional mentors, and the St. Louis community. Everything we do at Powered by Movement is for our people, and that’s what makes it so special! Our mission is to serve our community and improve each of our client’s health and wellbeing, bottom line. This is what keeps us going through any challenges that arise.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Powered by Movement Physical Therapy & Performance was started to change the game of physical therapy. We are full-spectrum healthcare providers that prioritize you and your goals. We love to say we are in the specialty of treating whole humans – not knees, backs, shoulders, or ankles. You are more than your injury and we want to help you be the best version of yourself! We provide formal physical therapy services for injury rehabilitation in addition to performance programming for people who want to become more active, move better, improve performance, and reduce risk of injury. All of our services are offered in-person and virtually.

Every physical therapy, wellness, and performance session is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy to ensure you get holistic, individualized care. You will have our undivided attention throughout your entire appointment. Gone are the days of feeling like a number, we care about you and your goals. We work with you proactively to meet fitness goals, identify the root cause of injury for long-term change, and help you get back to the activities you love! We help you move better, more often, and move for a long time. We firmly believe our bodies are powered by movement and yours is no exception!

What matters most to you?
I want each of our clients and our St. Louis community to take back control of their active health. So many people do not realize that it is possible to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle and enjoy it! The smallest lifestyle changes can make all the difference, and I hope to empower members of our community to take the right steps toward living their healthiest life.
