Exploring Life & Business with Emily Zwilling of CrossFit South City and EZ Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Zwilling.

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2002, I had graduated from high school and was in a bad place in my life. I had no idea what direction I wanted to go in my life and was unhealthy mentally and physically. I started working at an all-women’s gym called New Lady Fitness. Within a few months of working there, I started working out, learning about the business, and doing everything I could to climb the ladder. I had gone from receptionist to sales associate in a year and then decided I wanted to be the best personal trainer the gym had ever seen.

I initially got laughed at because I had a considerable amount of weight to lose, but I was determined. Within a few years I had lost fifty pounds and became the head personal training manager at that location. I felt like the greatest revenge was massive success! In 2008, I decided to open my own gym called CrossFit South City and founded EZ Wellness, my corporate and private practice, in 2017.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When you’re a business owner, there are many highs and lows. One moment you feel like you’re making a difference in the world, and the next moment you feel completely lost and a failure. I started my first business when I was twenty-four years old; looking back now, I was immature and didn’t know how to truly work a and manage business. I faced a lot of failures in life, made poor business decisions, almost became homeless, and chose poor partnerships that didn’t share the same core values. But I learn from my mistakes, take personal responsibility and keep moving forward no matter what.

In the first ten years of business, you’re most likely not taking much of a paycheck, and you don’t get a vacation, a retirement, or sick days. Yet, it is your life. You have to do it because you believe in it; if you’re in it for the money or the glory, you will surely fail.

We’ve been impressed with CrossFit South City and EZ Wellness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a gym owner and Integrative Health Coach, I’ve spent countless hours inside and outside the gym helping others reach their true aspirations and potential. But where I’ve felt the most significant reward and sense of accomplishment is teaching people how to build better, healthier, and happier.

Today, I dedicate myself to encouraging and empowering others to develop habits, routines, and mindsets that will genuinely change their lives for the better. I find great purpose in my work, and I am grateful to help make a difference in the lives of my clients.

CrossFit South City is not just a gym, it’s a community and a family of amazing people who want to improve their health. I am so grateful for our coaches who are the true leaders of our gym.

As an Integrative Health Coach, I help clients who struggle with the constant worry about food, weight and their bodies. I also specialize in helping clients with the following issues.:

Lack of energy, digestive issues such as IBS, Constipation, Leaky Gut.

Autoimmune diseases such as Celiac, Hashimoto’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Thyroid issues such as hypo and hyper.

I meet with my individual clients weekly via zoom or at my office in Clayton. I also do grocery store tours, private cooking classes and provide individualized workouts.

Proud moments:
• I opened my first gym in 2008.
• Every day, I am building healthier FAMILIES by empowering and teaching parents how to make better choices.
• Clients have been able to come off medications (with doctor’s approval, of course). I believe that many ailments can be cured through Holistic Medicine. This can be accomplished through diet, stress relief techniques, and proper supplementation.
• Since 2003, I’ve helped 100’s of people lose weight and KEEP IT OFF.
• I have been public speaking since 2014. The largest event I spoke at was The Taste of St. Louis, which had thousands of people.

*Starting a Podcast called Wellness Unfiltered in 2019, featuring my Podcast partner Kelley Bugger.

What makes you happy?
Things that make me happy are: helping others achieve their goals, empowering others, public speaking, podcasting, teaching, hiking, lifting weights, cooking, teaching people to cook, reading, journaling, learning, family time, date nights with my husband, and cuddling our pups.

All of these things bring so much joy to my life. Helping people gives me a sense of purpose and reward. I know how it feels to feel lost and unhealthy. I prioritize incorporating these things into my life to help manage stress and do something just for me.

Self-care isn’t selfish.
