Exploring Life & Business with Jennifer Kube of The Clipper Mobile Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Kube.

Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
This crazy ride all started nine years ago, when my oldest daughter had her first birthday, and we bought our first Airstream travel trailer to use for family travel. Every time we headed off on our next adventure, I thought about how cool it would be to have a mobile hair salon built into an Airstream. Weird? Maybe, but being a hairdresser for over 18 years, owning my own business for 10 of those, and loving what I do makes me always relate things to back to that love – hair.

I knew our big new big aluminum baby could be something more; curiosity got the best of me, and I began to research. I quickly found out that mobile hair salons were pupping up all over the West Coast, and I got excited.

Like, really excited.

Like, instantly-started-looking-for-yet-another-Airstream excited.

But not a family-toting, travel-ready one: this time, I wanted a fixer-upper – one we could really customize into exactly what I envisioned for the salon. After three long years of searching for the right one at the right price, we found one in Kansas City, Missouri. My husband Dave and I (let’s be honest, mostly Dave) spent the next two plus years turning a trash can into a treasure. The hard work has finally – finally! – paid off and we couldn’t be more excited to share this special little place with you.

The Clipper has been on the road for about four years now and constantly evolving. Doing onsite weddings, special events and pop ups have been our bread and butter. Up until 14 months ago. The Covid-19 pandemic forced us to pivot pretty swiftly. Since large gatherings were unsafe and restricted at the time, we had to get creative on how we got our services out there. We’ve started doing neighborhood haircuts where we show up on site and offer services to several families. Neighbors gather and make a day of it, getting pampered and hanging out. It’s really worked out great.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Initially, I would have said that the build out of the trailer was the hardest. Being the mother of two young girls at the time, there were A LOT of sleepless nights. We would put our kids to bed after working our full-time jobs, then head out to our driveway to transform the 60 years hunk of aluminum into something great. As with any rehab, whether it be an old home or vintage car, there were challenges. Ones we were never prepared for and didn’t know how to tackle. But a lot of creative thinking and problem solving helped us overcome them and complete the work to get her on the road.

Three years after opening, I would have to say the pandemic has been the MOST challenging. Quickly altering the how and why of your business is never comfortable. But I must say that I am truly grateful for my situation. I have in some ways, INCREASED sales because of the isolation The Clipper provides. A lot of times, it is just me and the client in the unit, allowing a space without additional unnecessary exposure.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Clipper Mobile Salon is designed to deliver a one-of-a-kind hair experience, infusing modern salon techniques with a midcentury vibe. We partner with companies to provide on-site services to busy professionals and work with a local pediatric hospital to provide salon services pro bono to those who may otherwise not have access to them. Our speciality IS speciality: if you have a wedding or other notable event, we’ll put a unique spin on your day (or night!). Email or call to find out how we can make your next event picture-perfect.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t let anything stop you. If you know in your gut there is something you HAVE to accomplish, that means you were put on this earth to do so. It won’t be easy and it won’t always be fun, but don’t give up.

Pricing:

  • Pricing depends on location but we do have a $350 minimum to show up on site. This can easily be met by gathering friends and neighbors. Haircuts start at $47
