Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Pruitt.
Hi Joseph, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I didn’t grow up with a blueprint for success — I grew up figuring things out the hard way. There were no business mentors in my life, no safety nets, and certainly no inheritance waiting in the wings. Just a lot of tough breaks, hard lessons, and a choice: survive, or build something better.
In 2009, I quit my job and started Pruitt Mechanical Services with nothing more than a beat-up truck, some borrowed tools, and a fire in my gut to create something that would last. I had no real business plan — just a deep belief that if I worked harder, treated people right, and stood behind everything I touched, something good would come of it.
What started with small service calls has grown into a multi-million-dollar company offering plumbing, HVAC, and electrical across the River Bend region. We’ve built an incredible team, earned awards for our work, upgraded our fleet, and stayed rooted in the values that got us here: integrity, grit, and a relentless drive to deliver.
I built this from the ground up — not just to create a business, but to change the course of my life and the lives of those around me. And I’m just getting started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not even close. And I think any business owner who says it’s been smooth probably isn’t telling the whole story.
Building this company has been a grind. There were years early on where I didn’t know how I was going to make payroll or keep the lights on. I’ve worn every hat — technician, dispatcher, sales, collections, manager — sometimes all in the same day. I’ve worked holidays, missed important family moments, and poured everything I had into this business just to keep it alive.
There were setbacks I never saw coming — bad hires, failed partnerships, equipment failures, even injuries. And there were plenty of moments where I questioned whether I had what it took to keep going.
But those struggles are exactly what shaped this company. They forced me to get better, to build smarter systems, to lead differently, and to surround myself with the kind of team that could weather the storm with me. The road hasn’t been smooth — it’s been full of potholes, detours, and uphill climbs — but I wouldn’t trade it. Because every scar on the path has made us stronger.
As you know, we’re big fans of Pruitt Mechanical Services LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Pruitt Mechanical Services is a full-service plumbing, HVAC, and electrical company based in Bethalto, Illinois, proudly serving the River Bend and Metro East communities. From water heaters and furnace installs to electrical upgrades and full home system replacements, we specialize in delivering dependable service with a personal touch.
We’re a family-owned, community-rooted company — built from the ground up with hard work, high standards, and a deep commitment to doing things the right way. What started as a one-man operation has grown into a multi-trade, multi-million-dollar business with a strong leadership team, a fully upgraded fleet, and a reputation for quality that we’ve earned one job at a time.
Over the years, we’ve reinvested heavily back into the business. We’ve expanded our service area, added new plumbing and electrical divisions, and rolled out an entirely new fleet of branded service vehicles that reflect our professionalism and pride. But what matters more than growth is how we’ve grown — by sticking to our values, treating customers like family, and creating opportunities for our team to thrive.
Our commitment to community has been recognized through multiple awards:
🏆 Best of the Best (three-time Heating & Cooling champion, two-time Electrical winner, Plumbing runner-up)
🐐 GOAT Awards winner across HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical
📣 Readers’ Choice Awards and consistent five-star Google reviews
But the truth is, we don’t chase trophies — we chase trust. These awards are a reflection of the support we’ve earned from the very people we serve. That means everything to us.
What sets us apart is the culture we’ve built: we’re service-obsessed, future-focused, and committed to leaving things better than we found them. We believe in building something that lasts — not just for today, but for the next generation.
That includes creating real career paths in the trades, reinvesting in our people, and laying the foundation for generational wealth. My own son is already learning the ropes alongside us, and we’re building a company that he — and the rest of our team — can be proud to carry forward.
At Pruitt Mechanical Services, we don’t just show up to fix problems — we show up to make a difference. We’re here to serve, to lead, and to keep raising the standard for what local service should feel like.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think luck shows up — good and bad — but it’s what you do with it that matters most.
I’ve had my fair share of bad luck. Injuries, setbacks, betrayals, equipment failures, slow seasons… you name it. There have been moments where I felt like everything was stacked against me. But I’ve learned that bad luck is just a test. It doesn’t define you — how you respond does.
At the same time, I’ve had some good luck too — moments where the right person came along at the right time, or an opportunity opened up just when I needed it most. But even those “lucky breaks” only worked out because I was willing to show up, take a risk, and do the work. Luck might open a door, but grit is what gets you through it.
The truth is, most of what we’ve built at Pruitt Mechanical wasn’t luck — it was earned. It was built through long nights, tough calls, and a relentless commitment to keep moving forward no matter what. So yes, luck has played a role — but only because we were prepared to do something with it.
