Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard & Olivia Averhart.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I (Richard) have a stepfather that has been in the appliance trade for many years. Throughout high school, I would go into his shop and repurpose older appliances. He would give me a few bucks for pocket change. From that point, I knew appliance repair would be what I wanted as a career.
When I finished high school, I worked in a few production factories as many young adults do. Not long after, my stepfather offered me a job, and I took it! I loved being on a route, driving, and fixings things. I also love interacting with my customers, and meeting new people.
Anyway, I worked for him for a while, and that turned into moving on to another company, then eventually being employed by a major manufacturer, as one of their specialty technicians. I have been studying in my profession for 17 years. On April 08, 2022, I decided to open Show-Me Appliance Service with my wife, Olivia.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a rollercoaster so far. Delving into the aspects of running a business is eye-opening for someone who hasn’t seen that side of things. It has been a lot of learning and some curveballs along the way. We learn and grow every day, and the road will eventually be paved to success.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Show-Me Appliance Service will be known for providing great service at an affordable price point. Appliances are very expensive these days; we want to try and alleviate the financial strain of having to buy a new $3,000 refrigerator. This means if your refrigerator’s compressor stops working, we know exactly how to repair it. This knowledge comes from specialized training and certifications, that not all repairmen have. This will set us apart from the competition. Some companies will come out to your home knowing it’s a compressor issue, only to collect their dispatch fee and tell you they don’t work on compressors.
We offer full repairs at flat rates, instead of hourly. This prevents the customer from feeling like they got ripped off by an incompetent repairman and ensures I am fairly paid for my time and my vast knowledge of appliances. I want the customers to have a fair and honest repair business close to their homes.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I was very fortunate in this matter, a good friend John Amini, formed a business networking group at the same time we opened for business.
