Exploring Life & Business with Teresa Donaldson of I Am Classic Grooming

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Donaldson.

Hi Teresa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
It all started at home you see my dad showed me how to cut his hair. He told me he gets compliments often on his haircut and suggested I go to school to become a Barber. Eventually, I did just that and went to Antonio’s Barber College in North St. Louis. I’ve lived in and cut hair in a few other states and picked up more skill and experience from other barbers. After a while, I moved back to St. Louis and decided to really hone in on my craft so dove into natural hair care products for my clients. Currently, I’m rebranding, working on products, and providing great services to my clients.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of my experiences have made me stronger and have taught me to have patience with people. Because I’m a woman in a male-dominated field I’ve experienced some things for sure but mostly with male walk-ins that don’t think I can cut hair because I’m a woman. In time usually, people can see that’s not true at all.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is based on quality work and great service. I really feel like I’m taking care of my clients when they are in my chair. I set an atmosphere that is relaxing and peaceful. I use and recommend products that I would use. I try and educate my clients so they can properly take care of their hair, scalp, and or beard. I love helping people so I always try and do a coat and or food drive during the winter/fall months to give back.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I would say to educate yourself in the areas of self-management and financial management. Because we are paid daily some can develop a habit to continually spend and not manage money properly. Continue to learn and stay current with trends and hairstyles. Learn how to market yourself and business.
