Hidden Gems: Meet Courtney Gerding of CGSQUAD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Gerding.

Hi Courtney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Looking back, I could not have imagined I would be where I am today. My love for all things fitness, health, personal growth & self-development grew from my struggles. During early adulthood, I was about 50 pounds overweight & inactive with terrible eating habits. You couldn’t pay me to run, let alone go for a walk. I had a great support system who tried to encourage & help me get healthy, but it wasn’t until I had a lightbulb moment of my own that I decided I was READY for a change. I started making small shifts in my food & exercise habits. I was unable to run, so I started walking. I started writing down what I was eating so I could make small shifts in my nutrition habits. Over time, my walking turned into running and I felt better because I eating better. I decided to sign up for a 5K, then a 10K, then a half marathon that eventually became running a full marathon. Going through such a transformational journey changed my life and I fell in love with what I used to hate! I began volunteer coaching for a local running club and I absolutely loved helping people along their journey because I had been there myself! At the time, I was working my full-time corporate career in HR Management for a well-known company which I loved and never saw myself leaving.

During my 12 year career, I worked my way up within the company, got married, had our son & soon after, started thinking about the possibility of staying home and start my own business. I honestly had no idea what I would even do, I just felt the calling to do SOMETHING related to what I was truly passionate about. As hard as I tried to ignore that calling (I wrestled with it for at least one year), I finally decided I was going for it and put in my notice. It was one of the most difficult, painful, gut-wrenching decisions I have had to make. I was leaving with nothing waiting for me. I was leaving a career I had literally poured my heart & soul into for 12 years. I was leaving a highly sought after position at a company I thought I would be at forever. It all left me feeling completely lost & terrified, but in my heart I just knew it was the right thing for me to do, so I took a leap of faith, hoping to figure it out on the way down. I spent the next year enjoying time with our son & soaking it all in. I wasn’t quite sure what my vision was long-term, but I was trying to figure it out. I started teaching fitness classes and I loved helping people along their journey because of what I went through. My vision started to narrow and I decided that I was going to start teaching my own fitness classes. I was clueless about starting a business and literally started from square one. Thank goodness my husband is the organized one because he has helped me every step of the way. I spent a year putting together a business plan (I use that term loosely!), hired someone to design my website, secured a rental space and had a plan in place to launch my fitness business on April 6, 2020.

When the world shut down in March, everything was put on hold and the launch was postponed. I had to change literally every aspect of my business plan in the coming months. As devastating as it was to work so incredibly hard for something that no longer worked in the world as we knew it, it was the best thing to ever happen to me and my business. I used that time to dive into personal development and growth, listen to podcasts, research and refine my business plan. I started offering free outdoor fitness classes every week during quarantine to help people stay connected as best we could. I created a free FB group where I offered free zoom workouts, challenges and nutrition tips. When the world began to open back up, I had a new business plan and a fire in my soul to help people more than ever before. I launched my fitness business & 1:1 mindset coaching in December 2020 and never looked back. Within just six months of opening, the company has grown beyond what I thought possible; I’ve gone from a one woman show to now hiring a team! I would not be here without the help of my family, friends, my team & the amazing community we have in the CGSQUAD. Our vision to impact & empower women not only in their bodies but in their mindset is beyond what I could have ever hoped for and I could not be more excited for where we are going!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything BUT smooth, but I can look back and see how all of the hardships I have endured have truly made me a better leader, business owner, wife, mom and friend. Sometimes we don’t know how strong we are until it’s the only choice we have. I started my business with no prior experience while trying to juggle being a first-time mom. I’ve learned how to balance when to push & when to shut it off. I hope I can inspire others to know that they can do anything they put their mind to live the type of life they truly want.

I have done and continue to do a massive amount of personal development work because if you don’t work on yourself, you’ll never grow to get where you want to be. I am more selective with my time commitments and have had to create a lot of boundaries because you can’t say yes to everything. I’ve learned that you can’t do everything yourself and that having a team of like-minded people behind you who support your vision is the most amazing gift I’ve ever been given.

At the end of the day, you have to be so rooted in your purpose and who you are that nothing can bring you down. Going through those really dark, trying times where you question everything has made me a better person and business owner. I am truly grateful for the hardships along the way whether it be from other people, situations or setbacks that I’ve faced because it prepared me for where I am today and I’m stronger for it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about CGSQUAD?
CGSQUAD is known for empowering women to be strong in their body & in their minds. We work on our mindset as much as we work on our bodies & our motto is ‘1% better every day’. We help women regain balance in all areas of their life to drop the all or nothing mentality. We specialize in fitness, but I also offer 1:1 mindset/accountability coaching. I believe that when you work on improving & broadening your mindset, everything in your life changes for the better. If we had a mascot, it would be a unicorn because we are all about embracing who you are and having FUN! I’m known for my love of fun-themed workout days, goofy post-workout boomerangs & leaving inspirational post it notes on the front door when members walk in. I always joke that you could show up to the gym in your pajamas and no one would care, which is honestly true! We have such an incredibly supportive, encouraging, empowering community; we are much more than just a gym. I strongly believe in helping others shine so that we can all shine brighter together and our community embodies that 100%.

Any big plans?
We are expanding! I launched my business renting space from a local woman-owned business (Regan, you are the BEST!) and I will be moving into my own space in the coming months to expand our gym! Our vision for the CGSQUAD is expansive & it truly makes me excited to get out of bed everyday! We will be expanding our reach beyond just a gym so that we can impact lives around the world. I want to help women grow in all aspects of life so they can step into their greatness! I hope to inspire others to see that anything is possible… stay tuned!
