Hidden Gems: Meet Desirae Maupin of Dizzy Dyes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desirae Maupin.

Hi Desirae, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My tie-dye obsession began at the City Museum. There was an art station that allowed kids to tie-dye a shirt, and I was SO excited. While making it, I dyed the smallest sliver pink, but when I rinsed it. Most of the shirt was pink. Since that shirt didn’t turn out how I wanted it to, I started watching videos and practicing tie-dye art. Like most moms, mine didn’t enjoy that I took up such a messy hobby, so I slowed down until my senior year of high school. My chemistry teacher taught us the science behind tie-dye, and I fell in love again not shortly after I started a business and named it Dizzy Dyes because of a childhood nickname.

The idea behind Dizzy Dyes is that every tie-dye garment is unique to its owner. We offer numerous blank items that you can decide the dye style and color scheme of. [For example, you can get a long sleeve with a spiral using the colors blue, lavender, and mint] My business has been steadily growing since opening in 2017. We now offer more than 20 customizable clothing items and are starting to focus on home decor. I want our customers to continue to feel creative freedom and express their personalities through everyday items.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been very smooth. I’ve been very determined to do everything myself, even when I don’t have the time. One of my main struggles is marketing. I love fulfilling orders and creating new things, but posting about it is a different game. I can tell the difference in my business whenever I give it my all and when I don’t.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is called Dizzy Dyes. I picked that name because my family has always called me Dizzy, and I like to tie-dye. I don’t know. It just seemed like a perfect fit. We specialize in customizing clothing and home decor. I firmly believe that everyone is unique, and the things they own should be unique to them. Even if someone were to pick the same colors as you, each item is handmade, so it will never be an identical copy.
I think that is what sets me apart from other tie-dye companies. I let my customers decide what they take home.
I’m most proud of how my skills have evolved, and I can now offer more services.

What does success mean to you?
I define success as happiness. I know that running a business is challenging, but if something doesn’t give you joy overall, it’s not worth your efforts. Even though my business isn’t huge or in every department store, I feel very successful. I can do something that I love and spread joy to others.
