Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayson Thornton.
Hi Jayson, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey in finance started when I was very young. My mother and father are small business owners, like most small businesses, their children all played a role working in the company. My love for computers and being naturally good with numbers put me into the role of a “bookkeeper” since I was nine years old.
As I got older, my role expanded. I became the first member of my immediate family to go to college. After graduating with a degree in Accounting, I came back home and stepped into the role of personal Financial Advisor for my father. I was tasked with advising my father on all his business and personal financial issues, no matter how big or small the topic was my parents valued my opinion.
My career path changed the day the IRS audited my father. He was sent a tax bill that was over $500,000. As a licensed Financial Advisor, I was able to represent my father before the IRS. After going back and forth with the IRS for months, I was able to successfully negotiate the tax bill from over $500,000 to under $5,000. This was the turning point, I saw the drastic need my community had for my skills as an accountant and my own value.
I decided to grow my small practice from only managing my personal family account to a full-service Financial Advisor specializing in Tax and Financial Planning. To ensure that I would be able to give my clients the highest level of service, I went back to school and became a proud graduate of Howard University School of Business Financial Planning program.
With the support of my wife, Kendra and my children, I have been blessed to build a financial planning firm that includes Tax, Investments and a YouTube channel (Pocket Watching with JT).
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has not been a smooth road. While my mother and father have always placed their full confidence in my abilities as an accountant, I’ve had to overcome the perception of being too young. The other major hurdle I’ve had to get around is the lack of awareness of the need of financial planning in the Black community. Far too many people think that financial planning is only for the rich, and even higher income members of the Black community have a mistrust of financial advisors because of the industry’s predatory history.
As a Black Financial Planner, not only do I have to be a competent accountant, I also have to win over hearts and minds, but I’m up for the challenge.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about THORNTON Advisor Group LLC?
THORNTON Advisor Group LLC is a collection of three (3) businesses I founded to serve what I saw as a great need for financial services. This is what sets me apart in the marketplace. I am licensed both as a Tax Advisor and as an Investment Advisor, which is extremely rare as an accountant. I have the ability to do tax work and financial planning, and with the third company, I provide financial education with my YouTube channel Pocket Watching with JT.
I have worked very hard to get the education, licenses and credentials needed that give me the privilege to have unlimited rights of representation for my clients in all financial matters.
How do you think about happiness?
I’m extremely goal-oriented, so I’m at my happiest after accomplishing a goal. I make goals for myself all the time, personal, family, career and financial. I am a husband, father and accountant, in that order! Growing up in a family of business owners, I knew the freedom and flexibility it gives you. While it’s definitely hard work, I was built for it.
I’ve learned that you have to make time to create memorable experiences, I’m blessed to be able to share them with my wife/college sweetheart Kendra and our three beauty children.
