Today we’d like to introduce you to Jernisha Hayes.
Jernisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started when I was born on June 30 in Saint Louis, Mo. Growing up, my dad constantly reminded me I was a star, and it was only right I lived by it. It wasn’t until my current late 20s that I understood what he meant. I have always been confident, but now I am fearless, A rising star. The Bag Bar was introduced on 6/30, 2020. I was honored by W Karaoke Lounge in the Delmar Loop for opening while closed and allowing me to do my first brand photo shoot. From that day forward, I saw how far my effort and potential could get me. My love for handbags began when I was a toddler when it was formally known as a “pocketbook.” My favorite shopping places for various bags were my mom’s and aunt’s closets. I have always admired how a handbag can add Pizazz to the most simplistic outfit. Growing up in high school, most of my book bags were quickly replaced by purses or large totes. Years of following the latest trends, many successful designers inspired me as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Tory Burch, and the newest Telfar. With extreme dedication and time, The Bag Bar will too be a well-known “inspo” bag brand. I am building a brand that will last a lifetime. Networking is the key. Most of all, my bags are from a manufacturer located in Italy. I spend days and nights researching to become greater in advancing my brand. (Time management and patience.) For The Bag Bar to succeed, I’m willing to go beyond measures for my vision to become my reality.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being on this Bag’preneur journey has not been easy by a long shot, but I improvise faith. Since 16 years old, I have always worked for more money and not working for an actual purpose. I’ve always carried the drive of making funds and challenging myself to find higher-paying jobs, but even that was unsatisfying. That alone created unbalance in my life. When my brand began, I started with nothing but a pen and a plan. Although I executed my plan perfectly in 2020, by 2021, I took a few months off. So many overbearing and overwhelming days led me to believe maybe the entrepreneur life was not for me, but this was all a challenge. I needed a strategic plan. Selling bags keep me afloat and uplifted. It highlights my creativeness. I then invested in myself. Investing included time, journaling, healing, researching, attending SBDC zoom meetings, local vendor opportunities, free webinars, and speaking to already successful business owners. I then realized my only challenge was me. Success comes in cans, not can not. Failure only happens when you don’t choose success.
