Inspiring Conversations with Alexis Hodges of Natural State of Mind

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Hodges.

Hi Alexis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a 15-year survivor of a chronic inflammatory bowel disease called Crohn’s Disease. In 2019, my condition took a turn for the worst, and I spent the majority of the year hospitalized which resulted in bowel resection surgery. While in the hospital I barely had the strength and will to want to bathe, so my skin suffered tremendously.

I spent weeks in recovery thinking about what I could do to share my experience while giving back to my community.

In September of 2019, I developed Natural State of Mind, an essential skincare brand that focuses on creating products in the most organic state of physiology by including essential ingredients that have not been chemically manipulated.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entreneaurship is not for the weak. I didn’t know anyone that was organically making skincare products. Skincare for me is not just making people look good on the outside, I wanted to make sure I was formulating my products to have physical, mental, & emotional benefits as well.

Since I didn’t know anyone that made skin care products, I spent months researching ingredients and techniques for making soap.

A lot of trial & error throughout my formulation journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
When I hear the words “Natural State of Mind”, it brings me back to the times when I spent my summers attending cooking and science classes at Florissant Valley College. Who knew fifteen years later, my essence would take me back to my natural state of mind.

Natural State of Mind stands for creating products in the most organic state of physiology while promoting awareness of proper absorption.

I specialize in creating all-natural skincare products that are targeted to improve the overall appearance of the skin by incorporating “superfood” ingredients that not only heal consumers externally but internally as well. My products target consumers with extremely dry and damaged skin. My products improve the appearance of stretch marks, reduce the overproduction of pigment and help with the relieving of overactive hormones.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Do not skip the learning process. Do as much research as possible. Don’t be afraid to fail. Failure builds humanity and erases the feeling of fear.
