Inspiring Conversations with Jay Thomas of HR From Scratch Career Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Thomas.

Hi Jay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, My name is Joshilyn, Formally known as Jay Thomas. My journey to becoming a recruiter trainer started last year in October of 2021. I was transitioning from the healthcare field then and enrolled in Maryville University Saint Louis in the Human Resource Management program for my bachelor’s degree. I was seeking to start a new career path in tech or HR. I was starting from scratch, and I had customer service experience and a few remote positions, so my ability To transfer that communication, Technical, computer, and communication skills got me in the door for my first recruiter interview. I have experienced many interviews with multiple or little to no rounds with multiple companies and learned something new every time within my “failures “to land a role, but I knew that the right company would be for me. I eventually started working for a small start-up company earlier this year in January 2022. and over the time I spent with that company, I learned so much and got hands-on experience in becoming a recruiter. I ended up leaving the company due to fraudulent contracts that I was never paid for, discouraging me for a minute. Still, it also empowered me to keep going and working hard for the life and career I want. I started connecting with hundreds of recruiters and hiring managers on LinkedIn while optimizing my profile to connect with the right HR professionals! And let me tell you, it has been a tremendous blessing. I had hundreds of recruiters reaching out to me via LinkedIn for interviews without me having to apply for the job. A recruiter from one of the biggest Aerospace companies in the world with whom I currently work reached out to me and found me via LinkedIn to schedule an interview, and I was hired on as a staffing specialist! He was incredibly impressed with my communication skills and all the skills I transferred throughout my interview and knew I would be a great fit for the company.

After about a month of working there, I had so many friends and family members reaching out to me, trying to figure out how I did it and how they could get in the door for recruitment and Staffing. And that’s when I birthed HR From scratch Academy. I sat down for one month, creating a course from SCRATCH on how to become a recruiter and get your foot in the door the same way I did. When I announced my recruiter training course, it was a “Hot Topic” everyone was interested in, and I went viral via Facebook with over 25,000 followers. TikTok had reached over 60,000 views with people who were also interested in learning, and I made over $13 000 my first launch. And over $30k year to date! When I saw how interested people were in getting into recruiting. I started implementing the idea of possibly opening up my staffing firm to get people real automatic job placements for entry-level recruiter roles and experienced HR professional roles, which is in the works right now as we speak!. After two months of my student enrollment, I have had countless testimonies and emails about my students Landing recruiter roles for some of the biggest Fortune 500 companies, staffing agencies, and start-up firms! With the overwhelming response of professionals wanting to land new positions and high-earning roles, I launched www.hrfromscratch.careers, with over six career packages professionals and job seekers can choose from to help launch their careers or transition into recruiting. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a pretty smooth road for the Academy. I have not gotten any bad reviews or responses. My work-life balance is the only struggle I’ve experienced throughout this journey. I’m still working for a Fortune 500 company while teaching others how to pivot and do the same, not knowing my business would be as successful as it is. I wasn’t prepared to interact with the number of people I do daily while still being a full-time worker and a mother.

HR From Scratch Academy is a game-changing HR school for beginners. I specialize in Staffing and recruiting and teach other professionals how to transition and pivot into HR with no prior background experience! I teach my students how to successfully transfer their skills to land interviews and roles. I also teach my students how to build the perfect LinkedIn profile along with interview prep Q&A and complete cycle recruiting training so that they can get hands-on experience with the day in life as a recruiter or Staffing professional. I also have created an HR From Scratch careers website with multiple career packages to choose from if you need help with your resume, LinkedIn, cover letter, etc., for professionals not enrolled in the training.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Personally, when it comes to networking, LinkedIn has opened so many doors for me. So many professionals from all areas of business and mentors help and motivate job seekers and business owners daily. I can’t believe how long I was missing out on these powerful connections with not having a LinkedIn profile. I also recommend YouTube! YouTube things that you don’t know and student them there are so many influencers and professionals on YouTube as well that help multiple people every day.
