Today we’d like to introduce you to McKinley Griggs.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My wife and I met in Middle School. By Highschool, we were hopelessly in love. During our senior year, we found out we were having a baby. It was hard but a blessing in disguise. We worked hard to get through college and get degrees. During all of this, we got married and had another child. We paid for our wedding by ourselves one thing we went keep on was photography. It was one of our biggest mistakes. Looking back, we barely have any photos of our wedding.
Once out of college I got my first job in IT thinking this is what I wanted because it would make a good living with a good salary but I realized I hated it. So, I ventured out. I dived into fitness and YouTube. I quickly discovered I loved using a camera to capture video and my story. As I became more familiar with my camera, I started taking pictures and really enjoyed this.
I started looking at our family photos and realized just how bad our wedding pictures turned out. This sparked an idea and the start of my passion. I realized that I didn’t want anyone else to miss out on those memories. So, I started Mckinley G Photography in September of 2019. Guess what happened right after that? Yup, a pandemic.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My wife had started helping with weddings and enjoyed them but brought up the idea of boudoir photography. We thought why not start up another branch of our business. So, during a pandemic, while raising two kids and both working full-time jobs, we were running two photography businesses. We have learned a lot in the last two years. The biggest takeaway from our experience is that we want our clients to walk away knowing that their memories will be forever captured and frozen in time. We want them to feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera. We learned that this is our passion.
We’ve been impressed with Mckinley G. Photography & She and Him Boudoir, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in wedding photography and Boudoir. I would say what really sets us apart is that I use off-camera flash and create more dramatic, artistic images. I also use a Canon film camera that offers couples a nostalgic-looking image of their day.
The whole idea is to express to my couples when they look back at their images, they can recall the days of their wedding and share specific details, like the smell of their flowers or food that was catered, the cool air in the fall or the hot summer days with amazing sunsets, images that allow them the ability to share finer details of their day with members of their family in the future.
Also, we are she and him boudoir because we work as a team to create amazing images to help clients feel confident. My wife helps with posing and uses natural lighting for her photos. I use off-camera flash for more dramatic images. We want our clients to see themselves as we do, beautiful. I want them to walk out of our studio feeling like they can conquer the world and have self-confidence that matches.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People may not know and are usually surprised that we have been married for 12 years and have a teenager and pre-teen. We feel like because we are young parents and married young, we have a lot of experience to share. We have insight on marriage, strong organizational skills, and a strive to go above and beyond.
