Inspiring Conversations with Meaghan Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meaghan Hill.

Hi Meaghan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am the woman I am today because of my praying mother, my beloved father, my supportive brother, my encouraging grandmother, and my village. My journey is truly a reflection of answered prayers and tears of gratitude. The Hill Collection’s conception began on my 32nd birthday after I learned the significance of the number 32, which symbolizes freedom and creative expression. For so long, I’ve dreamt of creating my own stationery and sharing it with the world, and that is exactly what I am doing every day. I’ve learned to make my own custom planners, journals, business cards, and logos; anything you can dream up I can create. I was so intrigued by the creation of faceless illustrations that I could not contain my excitement and expressed my fascination with my brother Marttise that I wanted to learn. Within the next 24 hours I received multiple YouTube videos instructing on how to create faceless illustrations. After watching these videos and getting support from my brother is what motivated me to purchase the equipment I needed immediately. I was so excited to learn how to create faceless illustrations, but I was nervous, because I was never the best artist, but I took a chance on myself and was willing to trust the process. After three to four days of watching videos, I was hooked. I find myself going over my old illustrations as I notice ways to improve their design because I am a perfectionist. I love that I trusted myself and didn’t allow the fear of not being good stop me from taking the leap, to launch out into the deep and bring my dreams to life.

Doing things afraid is the motto my mom preached to me, “It’s okay if you’re afraid, do it anyway.” That’s my motto each day And so that is what I am doing, living out my dreams even if they scare me a little. Melanated Healing Counseling & Consulting is my private practice that I will be launching this July. I am so excited to be among the Black and Brown clinicians in the Missouri region and worldwide. When thinking of mental health in the Black and Brown community it is a topic that is left unaddressed in most cases due to the stigmas surrounding mental health in conjunction with “I can fix it myself.” It is my hope as a Black clinician to provide access to those that struggle with accepting the need for help, life balance, reaching and maintaining a sense of mental stability. As a little girl I dreamt of being a lawyer or the next Shirley Chisholm, the road to therapy was never in my path however, yet here I am a Licensed Professional Counselor!! I was eager to be a beacon of hope in dismantling the stigma of mental health in the Black and Brown communities. My role as a therapist allows me the privilege to create a sacred space for my clients to process through their life experiences in ways that are healthiest for them. Everyone deserves to have access to a safe space with a safe person to process through life in a non-judgmental and supportive environment. I am immensely grateful for my journey and all it has taught me, how it has shaped me, and how it has transformed my life. True healing is the greatest gift one can give to themselves and I am thankful to be a part of that journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey of entrepreneurship has been a fascinating one to say the least. I have appreciated the ups and downs and grown so much throughout this entire experience. The biggest lesson I have learned is understanding my audience and not taking it personal when someone doesn’t like what I produce. Also, understanding that entrepreneurship requires a great deal of sacrifice and understanding of self and my craft. When you understand yourself, you attain a better understanding of the outcomes that you want to see.

As you know, we’re big fans of Melanated Healing Counseling & Consulting and The Hill Collection. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
This has been the year of taking chances and ambitious moves. I launched The Hill Collection which provides personalized designs of various stationary: personal planners, wall calendars, journals, workbooks, business cards, stickers, address labels, logos, and digital illustrations. The motivation behind The Hill Collection came from creating my own stationery, personalizing it to fit my needs. Being able to provide this service to customers and bringing their visions to life is something I take pride in and enjoy sharing. The Hill Collection is a beautiful new look on stationary and digital illustrations, and I am excited to share my designs and creations with the world.

Melanated Healing Counseling & Consulting is geared towards helping women and girls navigate through their life experiences while providing safety and support. Within my practice the focus will be women and girls who have experienced: trauma, depression, anxiety, self-esteem/self-worth, relationships/family dynamics, work-life balance and women’s issues through a person-centered, strength-based approach, and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). I was drawn to working with women who struggle with fertility challenges after completing my egg donor cycle. It allowed me to see the world through a different lens and hold space for the women that experience this situation. My services will be provided virtually as we navigate through this pandemic, with that same goal in mind to provide a safe space for my clients to process through life events with a non-judgmental and supportive approach. I want to walk alongside my clients through their growth and continue to support them on living the best life possible.

What’s next?
Future plan includes continuing my counseling practice expansion outside of the Missouri region and starting my non-profit organization offering continual conversations on mental health, healthily relationships, sexual health and women’s health. The Hill Collection will continue to thrive and hopefully be sold in stores one day. As always, my future goal is to help change the world, one act of kindness and service at a time. By not limiting my vision keeps my future bright.
