Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Coglianese.
Hi Nicole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Eight years ago I found out I was pregnant so I started taking yoga classes and researching ways to live a healthier life for my baby and myself. My daughter passed away when she was 10 days old. I felt like I was given the green light from many people to fall apart but my pregnancy and my daughter’s life inspired me to want more. In those weeks and months after her death, I learned that I experienced grief and emotions physically so I headed to the gym to process. Those weeks and months turned into years and yoga, Pilates, and refined movement became my therapy.
I started to unravel the physical, mental, emotional, and general health benefits of movement and I knew that I wanted (and needed) to keep moving. Eventually, it occurred to me that I could teach. I started with my RYT certification and then added Pilates and aerial yoga. I fell in love with teaching and dove in full-time as I furthered my education on movement and the body. Eventually, I noticed that there were many populations unable to access yoga and other forms of refined movement so I went back to school to learn how to communicate with and teach adults and children with deafblindness.
In 2020, I opened Citra Fitness & Movement. Citra is my brainchild, carefully developed from my experience as a yoga and Pilates instructor and inspired by the students I have had the honor to teach and learn from.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ha! No, it hasn’t been a smooth road but I’ve learned a lot because of the bumps, twists, turns, and detours. I honestly can’t remember most of the struggles because a lot of them were caused by me holding on to how I thought things needed to be and not looking at a struggle or problem as an opportunity to try something new or check out a different path. So many cool things happened when I let go. For example, I had an instructor move on to her dream career and I wasn’t able to fill her class time with another instructor. I was reaching to find something that would keep that class going without her. I was ready to cancel the whole thing and then a fun partnership came along and now that class is doing better than ever. But, like the rest of the world, my business was severely stunted due to COVID.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rooted in the ancient principles of yoga, contemporary Pilates methods, and a firm belief in the importance of having fun, Citra offers creative and structured classes that challenge your body and mind. Citra classes include aerial yoga, reformer Pilates, and traditional yoga classes. Citra also holds outdoor classes and fitness-based events like our Full Moon rooftop yoga class and DropSound yoga. We believe in thoughtful instruction and inclusion for all.
Citra will continue to grow and expand. I’m looking forward to creating more fitness-based events.
