Inspiring Conversations with Tenickia Hill of Pure Juice Stl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenickia Hill.

Hi Tenickia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started in December 2016 when I cried out to God. I was working a job that I hated. The job and other life events caused me to be fall in a deep depression. I felt like I couldn’t come out of it. I was just tired of everything. I cried out to God, saying, “God, I know there is more to my life than this.” “Make me better and change me, Lord.” It was about 30 days later January 2017 I was getting rushed to the hospital. I was losing a lot of blood which caused me to lose oxygen. I was never a sick person barely got a cold.

The doctors ran many tests, but everything was coming back normal. I was confused and just wanted an answer to what was going on with me. The Doctor later told me I wouldn’t be going home anytime soon because of my blood counts were severally low and they had to figure out what was causing all this. It was a Friday night. The doctor said he would was going to check for ttp but the test would not come back until Monday. Saturday Early Sunday morning, they couldn’t wait any longer for the test to come back. I was placed in ICU, and the doctor said we will treat you for ttp, and hope that plasmapheresis works. I had never heard of this and had no clue to what was going on. TTP is short for Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, is a rare blood clotting disorder in which blood clots form in small blood vessels throughout my body and leads to low platelet count. It is considered an autoimmune disease and is caused when I develop an antibody against the ADAMTS13 protease leading to low levels of the protease.

I first received a blood transfusion. Then a little later, a doctor placed a catheter in my neck for plasmapheresis. This process took about 15-20 mins and the only people who could be in the room was the doctor and nurse for sanitary reasons. I thought my mom would be there to hold my hand, but she could not stay in the room. I was so scared and began to cry. I asked who is going to hold my hand. The holy spirit whispered and said I will hold your hand trust me. I said ok God, and peace came over me. I was awake during the procedure and it went well.

Plasma Exchange/Plasmapheresis was next. This is a method of removing blood plasma from my body and receiving plasma from a donor. At that time, the plasma exchange process would last anywhere between  4-8 hours each treatment which was done daily until my platelet count was stable. That Monday, it was confirmed the I had this rare blood disorder.

My platelets went back to normal range after a week or so in hospital. I went home, and my platelets dropped back down in less than 24 hours. I was rushed back to the hospital and had to start the process all over. This time a Chemotherapy called Rituxan was added to my treatments. Rituxan was used to destroy all of my white blood cells, which were attacking my red blood cells.

The whole time all of this was taking place, I was mostly at peace. I didn’t fear dying and never felt like I was going to die. I prayed and read my bible every day, and God showed me many things during this time about him, life and people. At that point, I knew God was preparing me for something, but I didn’t know what. The devil was mad at me after all I had been through. I still had hope. I still planned and still had a dream. I was in the ICU, still holding on to God word and still planning for my future. After all I had been through I still believed God would heal me. After all the setbacks, I still had my dreams. Even after the crying, the pain and the uncertainty. I still believed God had a plan for my life and it was something bigger than I could ever imagine.

Finally, I was released from the hospital but had to continue plasmapheresis and chemo outpatient. This lasted about a month or so. The steroid blew me up so bad. I didn’t even recognize myself when looking in the mirror. But this was God’s way of telling me to love myself no matter how I look or feel and never forget your worth. Always take care of self.

In June 2017, I spent a about a month with my sister, who is a nurse. She lived in San Antonio at the time. She pushed me to walk every day to build my strength back up. One day I had a craving for some vegetables and fruit. I of course, googled  to see what was around. I was originally looking for a Jamba juice, but I seen a place that sold cold-pressed juices. I had never had one before so I was like, let me try this. I went tried a beet juice and it was delicious. I went back for more. I purchased a few different flavors, and I liked them all. One morning I drank some of my juice and headed out for my morning walk. I was walking, and I got a burst of energy. I felt like I needed to run. I hadn’t ran in months. So I started to run. And im like, omg im running. What the heck lol. I could wait to get home and tell everybody. I ran in the house and I was like, guess what, you guys, I was able to run a little during my walk. They responded, that’s good.

I continued to drink the juice, and my body was loving it. My body started to heal itself rapidly. I could feel my strength coming back. So it was time to leave and go back home. The place I was purchasing juices from did not ship. I was like, what am I going to do. So, I went home and googled again  to see if there were places in St. Louis that had cold pressed juices, but no luck. Then something told me to buy a juicer. I’m like, I don’t know anything about a juicer. But I followed the spirit and started to look for a cold pressed juicer. I did find one it was almost $500, and I was on a fixed income since I was out of work on disability/sick leave. Guess what they had a payment plan. I could get the juicer and pay as low as $20 a month. I was so excited. Everything just flowed really well. I received the juicer. I started just making my own juice. Then something told me to go deeper and research what to put with what. I started doing so much research on juicing and my health. I changed my diet completely. I cut out all all sugar the only sugar I was getting was from fruits and veggies. I cut out all bread, processed foods, dairy, pork, and beef. So my diet consisted of juicing fruits, vegetables, turkey and chicken. I did this for about 4-5 months.

I went to the doctor. Jan 2018 and the doctor said you have no signs of ever having a blood disorder. I was in remission. I continued my diet. I always took my juices to work with me. April 2018, a young lady I was working with asked what are those juices you drink every day. I was like cold-pressed juices. Basically fruits and veggies pressed together in cold temperatures. You get your daily fruit and veggie intake, and they are also packed with vitamins and nutrients to help cleanse and heal the body naturally. She was like, ok, I want to try them and I’ll buy them from you. I was like ok. I brought her some juices. She was like, these are really good. She ordered more and started telling our other coworkers about my juice.  They were all doing a weight loss challenge. So I started making them for more coworkers. I posted on FB and it was history in the making from there. I was getting so many orders I couldn’t keep up.

A year or so later, I bought a commercial juicer. The demand for juices increased. Then 2020 Covid happened. My juices were even more, a demand, and I was able to walk away from the job I dreaded going to every day. Now I have a juice bar in Golden Grocer. I make cold-pressed juices and smoothies. I also have juices in two other store locations  Greenleaf Market, City Greens Market, and I still take personal orders as well. I can’t wait to see what God has planned next. I’m breaking generational curses and living the life I want to live. I am the first person in my family to have products in several grocery stores. I’m truly grateful and thankful. God is awesome. I cried out to him, and he answered in a way I would never have imagined.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Actually, most things fell in place. Everything happened when it was supposed too. When I was working a full-time job and trying to keep up with the demand, that was a challenge. Someday, I would have to wake up at 3 in the morning to make juice orders for that day, and had to be at work at 6:30 am. God gave me a lot of strength I didn’t know I had. but for the most part, It was like everything was already planned and I just went with the flow and followed what the spirit told me to do no matter if I was unsure, didn’t know, or didn’t understand. Now, most of my problem is finding the right help. I have learned to wait patiently because God seems to cover all my needs. And when he does send things and people my way, it’s exactly what I need. I did find an assistant who also has a passion for juicing. Now we need more help at the juice bar, lol. But I know my God will come through.
