Inspiring Conversations with Troy Skaife of Soma Therapeutic Massage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Skaife.

Hi Troy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my business as a side job with the hopes of it to be a plan B to get out of the mortgage industry. I started my business by renting a room from my chiropractor, Darrell Carroll. Dr. Carroll was very generous and made it very affordable to start a business within his business. I worked there part-time for a little over three years working evenings and weekends. I was kind of burning the candle at both ends so to speak. But it was worth it. I was reinvesting my earnings into my business. I was working for a major lender in town and they closed the entire mortgage division down. Luckily with the beauty of Facebook, I announced day time hours are starting tomorrow and I had three appointments booked the next day. I thought to myself… this may work out. I wasn’t going to have the double income but I will survive. I worked full time as a massage therapist for another three years at the chiropractor’s office. I moved to the location that I’m at now and the first year, my business almost doubled. The storefront next to me became available so I expanded adding three more rooms. It was kind of like “Field of Dreams” … build it and they will come. I started interviewing therapists before the project was complete. I was confident with my team of therapists. I’ve always tried to have a relaxed work environment. I want the therapists to enjoy their time here and to feel like it’s not a job. I’m very proud of starting my business from nothing. I’m also very happy that we have survived even through the COVID pandemic. I couldn’t have done it without the help of our loyal clients and a very dedicated and professional team of massage therapists.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge was that I am a one man show. Starting out, I did the marketing, scheduling and the massages. Which “hat” am I wearing today? But honestly, I enjoyed learning the business aspect of it all.
