Life & Work with April Davis of Cahokia Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Davis.

Hi April; so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As the baby girl in my house growing up, I always tried to stick by my mother. My mom always went to the nail salon on 25th and state, where I grew up; she was a gospel quartet singer. We would be in the nail salon from sun up to sun down the whole day. Everyone you knew was getting their nails and feet done on the weekend. You saw your entire community, no fighting or anything. I would always first be drawn in by the smell of monomer. Airbrushing was very hot then. Putting your name on your nails was every girl’s go-to or their boyfriend, lol.

I got my first acrylic complete set at age 10 and became hooked every since. I didn’t start to get into the beauty industry until after I graduated from O’FALLON Township in Illinois. I decided to attend Regency Beauty Institute for Cosmetologists. I fell in love the 2nd time. Everyone was focused on hair but being a cosmetologist. We had to learn nails too. So I said, “April, just do nails; everyone else is focusing on hair.” Since I was pregnant when I started, due to my having my son, I couldn’t finish and get my license. Years went by. I became a Customer Relations Manager with Regions making what I thought was good money, still depressed and unhappy, going through postpartum, and lost my biological mother that same year. It wasn’t good. I would cry on my way to work. That year I decided to find and do what makes April happy. Nailz Dior was established in 2019. I attended school, graduated, and received my license in 2021-2022.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? Lol, not at all. It had bumps, lumps, cracks, repairs, and more. Struggles that I faced while obtaining my license came left and right. I sometimes guess when you ask God for something, he tests you to see do you want this. Ok. It took me almost a year to finally find a school for me, affordable in a close distance. I have four children, so I wanted to be close just in case. Building a good clientele was a struggle, and learning the business aspects. During the time I went to school during COVID, my kids were being taught remotely, and I also worked at a shop. It was a lot, but hey, I asked for it. I live and love it every day. So many people are unhappy doing something that they don’t love. I didn’t want to become like others I saw settling. So I’ll take the struggles now to be set later. Or so my kids can be set.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed nail technician in the state of Illinois. I specialize in acrylic nails, hand-drawn nail art, 3d art, and pedicures. I am most proud of the influence I can set, show and give to others. Many people watch you and admire what you do; some even copy. Some will let you know how you’ve impacted their life, but many won’t. I believe what sets Nailz Dior apart from others is my compassion for people and knowing how you could make someone’s day with just words, a service, etc. When I used to go to the salon, I wanted to relax with my girls and talk and uplift each other it seems like that’s going away at the salons. Certain places aren’t making their clients comfortable, so they would do it at home or stop going. At Nailz Dior LLC, however you feel it’s fine, you want to cry. I got the tissue, dance. I got the music.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is being happy and proud of something you have accomplished or achieved. No matter how long, old, young, short, or complex, being able to do it every day with a smile. That’s a success, not giving up!
