Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittnie Selbert. She/her team share their story with us below:
Co-owners Beth Clauss and Brittnie Selbert took over ownership of their home studio in November of 2019. After going through yoga teacher training the year before, both yogis knew they wanted to share the practices of Baptiste Yoga with everyone. That made this opportunity so much more special and they knew it was the right move. The events of 2020 tested their devotion and they used the tools they’ve learned from yoga to stay grounded and get clear on their mission: To create new space for the members of our community to experience the PHYSICALNESS, POSSIBILITY & EMPOWERMENT of the practice we love. After pivoting the business and teaching exclusively online during quarantine, Baptiste Power Yoga St. Louis now offers in-studio, online and outdoor yoga classes and workshops!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We hope that 2020 is the biggest speed bump we’ll encounter on our journey to growing our studio and yoga community. We never thought we’d teach or practice yoga online, and it was amazing to see the connection that was possible over the screen. As co-owners, we also never thought we’d teach so many classes in a year. We went from a team of 13 instructors to just the two of us. We could not afford to pay our team and barely made it out ahead in 2020. The support from our community was so inspiring — donations to help pay rent, teachers offering to lead classes and meditations for free, students adapting to online yoga and staying committed to their practice without a physical studio space.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We’re committed to three practices of Baptiste Yoga because we know they work!
Physical – As an access to power, vitally and freedom in our bodies. We lead challenging power yoga classes that allow students to discover their next edge and see what’s possible. The work we do on our mats facilitate our whole life. We also sweat a lot!
Meditation – As an access to getting present and awakening. Baptiste Yoga is more than just moving our bodies on the mat. Stillness and silence allow us to get clear on what’s actually happening right now and put our attention on what we want to be up to.
Inquiry – As an access to discovery and new possibly. We encourage students to ask themselves the hard questions so that they can live their best lives, rather than just drifting through day to day.
Every class, workshop, event, mediation or program we lead offers our students access to those three practices.
We know they work because we use them everyday to learn and grow.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Doing yoga with other humans! The connection that’s available in this practice is unmatchable. Connection to myself, the others around me and to something bigger.
