Life & Work with Hannah Chobanian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Chobanian.

Hi Hannah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I never had the drive for doing hair growing up, but I always loved doing my friends’ makeup in high school and college. It just never was a thought that I could make a career out of it. It was always expected of me to go the medical route, so with my passion for animals, I decided I wanted to be a veterinarian. That was short lived for me when I realized I couldn’t save all of the animals and realized I wanted to become a makeup artist instead. My dad, being a surgeon, didn’t love this change of career path for me, but after a few weeks of back and forth, he convinced me to try and give hair a chance as long as I finished my degree. I am so happy I gave cosmetology a shot, 6 years later I have an amazing career that I genuinely love. I’ve created an atmosphere that is so therapeutic to walk into every day and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I am so grateful for my background in biology as well as I think it has helped me succeed in my field.. not many people can say they’re a biologist hairstylist!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It absolutely has not! I have put so much work into this job. I spent a few years at a commission salon going in on my days off, staying late, or going in early to fit as many clients in as I could. I gave away countless free haircuts trying to get clients in the door and put my whole life into hair. I have given up social events and relationships trying to build my brand, but it has all paid off! I also struggled through college with severe anxiety knowing I didn’t want to do anything with biology and also not wanting to let my parents down.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a hairstylist and I specialize in color services and bridal hair. I am most known for my blondes and my brides! I am so proud to be running my own salon chair and doing it successfully at my age. I want to open up my own salon in the future and a wedding venue and I will be very proud of that when I accomplish it.

I think my personality is what sets me apart, all of my clients have become great friends of mine over the years and I pride myself in having a comfortable environment for each and every client’s specific needs. Most of my clients call me their “hairapist” and it’s such a compliment!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love St. Louis. I’ve lived here for almost 15 years and I can tell you that there is always something to do here and most of the time it’s free. I love going to concerts, rollerblading at forest park, checking out all of the farmers markets, and trying out new restaurants around town. We have so many hidden gems!

I don’t love how crime ridden some areas are, but I do feel a shift happening where more businesses are moving into the not so safe areas and breathing life back into them!
