Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Kristina.
Hi Holly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I remember working at Applebee’s in Clayton early 2010. This particular day I told my friend that once I got off I’d go with her to fill out an application at Macy’s in the St.Louis Galleria mall. At the time we could apply inside the store on their computers. Anyway, I went with her and I actually applied for a job in the beauty department. It was for the Impulse Beauty counter. Impulse was only in Chicago at the time (it’s like a mini Sephora. We sold so many different brands).
Whenever you don’t need a job you always get one right? RIGHT! Boom, I got hired.. I was part time so I kept Applebee’s during the day for about 3-5 months then I left Applebee’s and became full time at the counter. Impulse beauty really helped me become knowledgeable about the products I was using and how I should apply them. THAT WAS IT! How I learned to do makeup was practice! I already wore eyeshadow everyday so I knew how to apply it but I needed practice on other people, so I would have my friends and family come so I could do their eyes literally every shift. Eyes are my absolute favorite thing to do when applying makeup.
Fast forward, I left Macy’s in 2012 to see if I had a passion for anything else & I absolutely did not. I came back to makeup in 2014 where I started in Nordstrom St.Louis Galleria Mall. I worked for Bobbi Brown 2014-2016. I was flown out for training in Dallas and got so many perks for working at this counter. This was my bread and butter right here. This is where I learned about Skin types, undertones, & skin care! Once you have these three things down packed you definitely got the game on lock and you don’t even know it. I moved over to the MAC cosmetics counter in the same mall inside of Nordstrom 2016-2018.
MAC helped me alot with color!! How to blend eyeshadow colors, transitional shades, and colored lipsticks that weren’t nudes! Ahhhhhh, I remember my first day. I was so excited to be alive again and try new looks on myself everyday I worked. PURE BLISS! once I started having clients come see me and wanted makeup for prom and homecoming and I couldn’t do it due to the high volume of customers we had at the counter I couldn’t do full faces.. I literally walked out on faith and just put in my two weeks and left March 2018. No other job just makeup. I worked out of my house until I found a place to rent in Nov 2018. I worked sun up to sun down and made ends meet. Didn’t go to any concerts, clubs, parties, nothing! I was too exhausted, but everybody there had they face beat by me! HOLLY KRISTINA GLAM so I was satisfied!
I changed my shop location Feb 2019- Now. Here we are 3 years later and I’m still flourishing and growing personally and as a brand! You will have your ups and downs but you got to keep going. Nobody can do what you do & how you do it.! Focus on your own goals, Meet your goals, pray, stay in your lane, & put in the hard work! 2022 I’m coming harder than I’ve come before & I’m so excited about it. Makeup is my passion and it excites me and makes me happy! Real life happy.! When I’m sad or feeling down I’ll literally go do my makeup, take pics and post it. That makes me feel 80% better everytime! That right there lets me know this is where I’m supposed to be, but now it’s time to take Holly Kristina Glam and my next business move to a higher level and that’s exactly what I’m about to do so stay tuned!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur is not easy! It looks good for sure and it is, but it’s not easy! My struggles was closing down due to COVID and having a job where I couldn’t do makeup at all. My off days was so trash it just wouldn’t work but I had a job during the shit down and my bills was paid! That was a major blessing even tho I hated the job so bad I cried every single night from March 20, 2020 until Nov 13 2020 when I left the job and went back full time doing makeup but traveling to clients. Debating on if I should get my makeup space back or not depending on my clientele because I was gone for 7-8 months and did nobody’s makeup but mine. My heart was so broken I can’t even explain. I was miserable. April 2021 I got my space back and it’s now Sept 2021 and I’m back booming! Some old and a lot of new clients have been a blessing and I’m forever thankful! Always!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in soft & glitter glam makeup but I can do it all! I’m known for my makeup skills of course and my personality. I’m a Gemini so I meannnnnn. lol. I’m a blast in a glass and I’m real life funny not just on social media. Most importantly I’m genuine and I don’t have to tell people, they feel it & know it. That’s what sets me apart from anyone else that does what I do. Plus my customer service is and always will be Amazing! I treat my clients how I would want to be treated if I was to get a service done from them.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
