Life & Work with Jacob Geringer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Geringer.

Hi Jacob, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my real estate journey in 2000 as a trainee real estate appraiser. While on my way to my state certification in 2007 I was completing appraisals for the real estate downturn during the great recession. I had the daunting task of completing appraisals for banks and lenders who were foreclosing on homes. Most of the time these homes were still being lived in, many of which included children who would consequently be displaced by the bank takeover of their home. Many times these families had no idea where they were going and what was going to happen to them.

The kids were having to switch schools and make new friends, while the parents were unsuccessful at finding new employment and shelter. All of this was happening as a result of economic conditions. Let’s be clear these adults did not quit their jobs or get fired. In fact, many were successfully employed at their respective institution for years. They simply were laid off through no fault of their own. The global economy had turned and they were left on the outside looking in. This experience led me to wonder why real estate agents were still charging so much to sell a home. Typically, 6-7% of the sale price of the property. I thought, how many families are on the fringe of this devastating circumstance? How many could be saved from the generational stress of being homeless? If the homeowners could sell their home for less commission could they be saved from inevitably bankruptcy and financial catastrophe? This could save sellers thousands on the sale of their home. Surely this was a make or break point for some. MarketPoint Realty then became a vision that I was determined to pursue.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The vision has been well received. I didn’t know this at the time, but my 20 years of real estate appraising coupled with our low commission of 4.5% has helped separate us from the competition. However, real estate is dominated by companies who have been in the business for decades. So branding and name recognition have been complicated. We’re not new to real estate, but the public is new to us.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
MarketPoint Realty is a full service, appraiser owned, residential real estate brokerage that will save you 25% on the sales commission of your home. We specialize in the sale and purchase of homes in the St. Louis, MO metropolitan area. We also understand that a home is a financial tool and we advise our clients with that in mind.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The business today is moving very fast and you cant be an expert in all of it. So don’t try to be. Stay with your strengths and surround yourself with people who have strengths where you’re weak. Pick what you’re good at and stay in your lane. You have to trust the people around you. If you don’t or cant, you don’t have the right people.
