Life & Work with Katie Wilson-Barge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Wilson-Barge.

Hi Katie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Originally from a small town in Illinois, I moved to St. Louis in 2013 and have been proud to call this city home ever since. I attended Webster University where I graduated with my degree in Cultural Anthropology and minors in Criminology, Political Science, and French. My interests have always been diverse so when it came time to start looking for my next move career-wise, I had a difficult time figuring out where to start. Ultimately, I knew that I wanted something that would challenge me and also allow me to be creative, and that’s how I got started with blogging, content creation, and most recently, the launch of my online store, Kindred Spirits.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say that I have everything figured out, even today, but I can tell you I’m loving the journey. The good things in life are never easy and true success comes from overcoming challenges, not avoiding them. As I’ve grown and evolved, my work has too and I have no doubt that I’ll continue to see change throughout these next chapters of my life. I’m excited to announce that my husband and I are expecting our first child in late October and while we couldn’t be more thrilled, this has certainly affected the way I do business/create. For me, it’s been about giving myself grace and time to adjust.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Like many millennials, I have more than one hustle and I’m extremely thankful for a strong support system that allows me to pursue my varied professional goals. I currently work as a Transitions Manager at Cushman & Wakefield where I onboard our new commercial real estate clients; it’s a fast-paced environment and constantly changing which I love. During evenings and weekends, I spend most of my time managing my online shop, Kindred Spirits. As a team of one (plus my husband who is an honorary member), I am truly learning something new every day as I navigate the world of small-business ownership. When I’m not out sourcing new materials for the shop or writing up a blog post for the site, I am usually out and about creating content and exploring my city. I love sharing unique finds and interesting places with others and am always down to check out the newest spot in town! You can find my recommendations and STL-based content on my personal Instagram page.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was curious about everything and thankfully I had a family that supported that curiosity and encouraged independent learning. There was nothing I loved more than spending an entire day in the library, reading through a stack of books and getting lost in the worlds created by my favorite authors. When I wasn’t reading, I spent my time outdoors, going on bike rides, taking nature walks, and helping my parents in the garden.
