Life & Work with Mikayla Mains

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Mains.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was a stay-at-home mom who worked super part-time as a dance teacher as a way to make a bit of income but also as a creative outlet. When Covid hit, some dance classes went virtual and others got cut completely. The whole situation made me realize I didn’t feel valued where I was working so I ended up fully quitting by summer.

Needing a new outlet, I picked up polymer clay after buying my first few pairs from other makers and seeing youtube videos on how to create them yourself. I quickly fell in love with the endless creative possibilities the medium has and was making so many earrings; I knew I couldn’t keep them all for myself. Friends and family started asking for some and eventually, I decided to make it a business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. There have been numerous struggles. First being the fact that so many other people picked up polymer clay as a hobby or business during the pandemic, which created a clay shortage. Not being able to get my hands on the clay I needed was really frustrating. I also worked with another business on a collab a little too soon after starting and we didn’t work well together, which was really difficult for me to accept. The experience made me go into a creative rut where I even contemplated quitting.

Above all, I would say the biggest challenge has been trying to run the business as a mom. I want to pour so much more time into the business and it’s a constant juggling act. I definitely undermined how difficult that aspect would be when first starting out.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As someone jumping into a business market that I think is quite saturated, I often wonder myself what draws a customer to my work over another artist’s work. At the end of the day, I can only say what I think I do well. I believe that would be following trends and giving variety without straying too far to one extreme or the other. I love to offer eclectic pieces but also love designs that shine in their simplicity. I think this allows customers to always find something that suits them. I don’t really ever make something I wouldn’t wear myself so I take pride in every single piece.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I think it’s important to note why polymer clay is so popular. I get a lot off customers shocked by how light they are, making them incredibly easy and comfortable to wear. Earrings are durable and versatile; they can be casual or elegant. The possibilities are truly endless!
