Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayla Pedersen-Guy.
Hi Shayla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For as long as I can remember, I have loved three things and have based my entire life’s purpose on such- music, art, and ensuring that everyone I am privileged to meet knows that they matter. La Vie SPG was something I was hesitant to begin. The “influencer” market was already so heavily saturated by 2018, and transparently I wasn’t sure If what I had to offer social media would be anything others would want to see. Thankfully I have never been one to not try. I started simple, an iPhone and the clothing I already had in my closet, posting photos that I believed evoked the very essence of myself and the meaning behind the SPG in my brand’s name (which is also my marital initials) sophistication, playfulness, and glamor. La Vie SPG, the life sophisticated, playful, and glamorous was born. I’d only been content creating for seven months when my husband and I relocated from Orlando, Florida to St. Louis. Content creating in Florida is quite different than in the Midwest. For starters, Florida has one season year-round…HOT, while St. Louis has all four seasons. I was up for the new fashion and geographical challenges and continued to lean into what I know makes my brand special, me. I hit the Midwest ground running, immediately embracing my new journey as a Midwesterner and taking my followers along with me. I hired a professional photographer and constantly pushed myself and my creativity. I simultaneously fell deeply in love with St. Louis and myself. La Vie SPG is so much more than just pretty pieces…it’s a platform of immense purpose and as I swiftly approach the 2,000 follower threshold, I remain humble and happy to be doing what I love.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’m a firm believer that the things we love or want the most never come to us easily or we wouldn’t appreciate it. Transparently there is a major disparity in the exposure, opportunities for paid partnerships, and visibility for content creators of color. I have witnessed many white content creators skyrocket in followers and opportunities with far less creative and high-quality images than myself. Although unfair as a Black woman in America, I am not surprised and frankly, it pushes me even more to make my brand something extraordinary and open the door for other content creators of color.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
La Vie SPG ( The Life: Sophisticated. Playful. Glamorous.) is a splendid digital destination where pretty pieces, purpose, and positivity reside. The goal is that when anyone enters any of the brand’s platforms (IG, Laviespg.com, or Pinterest) they leave feeling happy, inspired, and seen. In a nutshell, I create fashion, beauty, and lifestyle content in a unique way. Since beginning the brand, I can say I’m most proud of my authenticity. All too often, individuality is sacrificed for likes and 15 minutes of influencer fame. I’ve stayed true to who I am and I pray I always will. I think what sets me apart from others in my field is my styling. I tend to teeter between giving a nod to vintage elements in a modern-day world, in doing so I’m able to reach older and newer generations at the same time and I’m all for that. Also, I make sure with every shoot I have pieces that encompass sophistication, playfulness, or glamour, something everyone can attribute their personal style with.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’ll say what I say to everyone. You are enough. You were before, you are now, and you always will be.
