Life & Work with Sydney Kell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Kell.

Hi Sydney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was in high school, I was in a multitude of clubs and sports. The two favorites that I loved the most were cheer and newspaper! To be honest, I always felt that I wasn’t smart enough to be a business owner. I was an average student and cared more about having fun than what would happen after high school. It wasn’t until the senior year that my newspaper teacher told me that I had an eye for photography. He paid for me to take a camp to learn how to use a camera in a journalistic way. I fell in love with photography and soon started photographing weddings and senior photos.

The year went on and graduation was a few week away. I was planning on going to Lindenwood University for cheer and marketing. Two weeks before moving in and starting summer practices, I decided I did not want to go, and I wanted to pursue the weddings I had booked! My now-husband, Tony and I have been full-time with our wedding photography and videography business, Chosen Photography for about six years now. Since then, we have opened up our intimate event space, Chosen Event Space, where we host bridal/baby showers and other small events. We also have gotten into investment properties and renovating homes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hardest part of being a wedding photographer at 18 was battling being “too young” I didn’t feel that insecurity until I had a mom reach out a few weeks before her daughter’s wedding day freaking out because she facebooks stalked me with my cap and gown on (lol). She felt I wasn’t qualified to photograph the wedding. That was an insecurity I battled for a while!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a classic and timeless wedding photographer in St. Louis. I specialize in capturing images that are timeless and elegant. I believe I am most known for photographing weddings that look high-class, beautiful, and in a way that will never go out of style. I am most proud of that after a year or so now that I feel fully confident with my style of photography and I can tell my clients are in love with it too! What sets us apart from others, I believe, is the way we work with our couples. We take a very calm and fun approach. I am careful to make sure I am keeping us all on time and work with big groups gracefully. Something we are proud of is that we are a faith-based company and we hope to share the light of Christ throughout our business and show His love to everyone we encounter.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
When COVID-19 hit, we decided to do what was uncommon in our industry and honestly do whatever we could to keep our couples happy. It may not have been the “smartest” business choice, but we felt and still do feel it was the best decision and greater outcome. When couples wanted to move their date, we did it without charging a fee. If a couple had to cancel, we found a way to make it work to where it felt fair for both ends. Nothing can prepare you for something like COVID. It was difficult when fall came around and weddings were beginning to start again more outside of the city limits and tackling our new normal.
