Life & Work with Syerra Meadows-Haynes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Syerra Meadows-Haynes.

Hi Syerra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started wanting to do photography because I love taking photos of people and things. I would always just snap the most random shots on my cellphone or the little Kodak cameras and hope to one day get a DLSR and shoot professionally. My husband, my boyfriend at the time, gifted me with my first DSLR camera and I starting diving deep into photography. I would take pictures of everything until I found my niche, which turns out to be portraits, branding and events.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, definitely not a smooth road! Practicing and studying is smooth because there’s so much out there to take pictures of and learn from different studies and photographers. But, the entrepreneurship behind this is challenging. Building a clientele, marketing yourself, stepping out there as an introvert, and finding what works best for you. I work a 9-5 job, so finding the time to do all of these things and more makes it even harder.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a portraits, branding, and events photography. That means I capture a lot of areas from family, couples, solo portraits, to professional headshots, to candid everyday life pictures, and all events under the sun (weddings, engagement parties, baby showers, reunions, etc.). I am known for finding angles and poses that bring the best out of my clients. I capture those most cherish moments as they are organically happening. I yearn for people to look back on the photographs I took and feel elated, gushy, and ever so thankful for capturing “that shot.”

I am most proud of the journey that I have taken. I have experienced many different areas, seen many things, been a part of many different moments, embraced my fears and made it happen. I am a storyteller. That is what sets me apart. This is not just a job for me. It is a passion and that exudes in how I approach every new opportunity. I enter people’s spaces and make emotional connections with them. I can get my clients to forget the camera and think of me as their friend while I shoot those cherished memories. I am here for them, and I want people to look back 10, 20, 30 years from our time together and feel all the emotions from the photographs I have taken.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Put yourself out there, do not let fear overtake you. I am an introvert, so this is hard for me to do but, no one else can help you but you.

Join all the social media groups, exchange information with folks, market yourself at events, ask for help when needed. Do everything you can think of to network and ask others what they have done to compare notes and do things you did not think of.
