Life & Work with Tayler Outlaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tayler Outlaw.

Hi Tayler, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a young fifth grader braiding my classmate’s and teacher’s hair in school. I watched my mom and aunties braid and style other women’s hair in the neighborhood. My dad was also a barber. All of these influences around me just gave me the drive to be in this industry. Since fifth grade, I had been doing hair and constantly teaching myself new things. In high school, doing hair was how I had to take care of myself financially. That independence and drive at such a young age helped me to get to where I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
None of this journey has been easy. I had been back and forth about what career path I wanted to take. I tried college and then the military. While in the military, I realized my passion was being an artist. I wanted to create art by styling hair. In cosmetology school, I had to quit my job in order to fully focus, so I barely had money. I survived off of my tips and the few clients I did have on the side. Then when it was time for graduation, I found out I was pregnant.

That was another setback because I was only 19, still struggling and trying to accomplish my dreams. Once I came off of maternity leave, I still didn’t have much help. I had to bring her to work with me and sometimes with her strapped to my back. I was blessed to have a few of the regulars and one of the barbers help me with her while I serviced my clients. Fast forward to 2020-2021; Mentally prepared and motivated to have my own salon. I had my few struggles, but I knew that they came with what I was working on. For those struggles, I am grateful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed cosmetologist who specializes in hair extensions and hair cutting. I am also great at natural hairstyling, hair coloring and makeup. I am most proud of my multi-skill level in this industry. What sets me apart from others is my passion behind the chair, my passion to help others behind the chair, my passion in studying the science behind my skills, and also being not only a Stylist to my clients but a friend.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those just starting out is to network with people out of your comfort zone or your “circle”, always carry yourself as a beauty professional because people buy with their five senses, be passionate about what you are doing in order to succeed in it, always remain humble, and always be willing to learn. When I started out, I wish I had paid attention in a marketing class in high school. Marketing is going to be your best friend while building your business. Get into it!!
