Meet Christa Klotz of The Selfie Room

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christa Klotz.

The Selfie Room started one day in November of 2018 when two sister-in-laws sat down during a family dinner, the men watched a football game while Erika and Christa talked about a new business concept. By the time the football game was over, Erika and Christa had a complete business plan, a rough estimate about how much it would cost to start and a name for the new business. By February of 2019, The Selfie Room was opened in Downtown St Louis.

With Erika and Christa both having business degrees and multiple years of experience with their own individual businesses, it was easy for them to start a new company together. Erika’s marketing strengths helped launch The Selfie Room’s social media presence, while Christa’s management experience helped form the business and take care of the Finances. Both Erika and Christa’s creative skills were used to design and create multiple exhibit backgrounds and props. “Neither of us thought we would use as much math in creating the exhibits, but I’m sure our high school math teachers would love to say, “I told you so, that you would use geometry and algebra as adults.” We regularly need to find the square footage of a room to figure out how much of a prop we need to order to create an exhibit”-Christa Klotz

The concept was simple; give guests a fun and creative space to take photos with colorful backgrounds and unique props. Within the last few years, we’ve created exhibits like our lemon room with giant 3 foot lemon wedges, a life-size Chinese take out box that stood 3 feet high and almost 4 ft wide, and our newspaper room, to name a few of our popular exhibits. In fact, we’ve changed our exhibits four times a year, giving us over 100 exhibits so far.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
For any new business, you have to learn what works and what doesn’t by trial and error, for The Selfie Room, we’ve had to learn that we need a few policies regarding our customer’s interactions within our space, like a damage waiver and a play at your own risk policy. But for the most part, it’s been smooth sailing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Selfie Room is a series of rooms each with their own theme, colors and props. Everyone needs their own admission ticket and we are currently taking reservations seven days a week. Admission grants you access to All of our rooms, during an hour long reservation clients are allowed to explore our open concept space at their leisure where they will get great photos in each room. With professional lighting, even a cell phone will capture stunning photos. If clients want to take their experience to the next level or celebrate a special event, they can reserve a photographer from our VIP Package. The photographer will help with posing, making sure to capture the client’s best angle and make sure they get stellar photos during their visit. The VIP package is great for engagement photos, graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, and even wedding photos.

What makes The Selfie Room unique is our rooms, our rental options, like our “selfie kit” which is a cellphone tripod with a Bluetooth remote. This option helps even our solo guests get amazing full-body photos, saying goodbye to the arm-length selfie. Additionally, we also offer prop rentals, giving clients the opportunity to rent luxurious floor-length satin robes, trendy jackets or golden crowns to bring their outfit to the next level. We’ve been called a millennial playground, but the space is great for people of all ages.

You can also reserve our entire space for a private reservation, we’ve had people reserve the space privately to make music videos, proposals, engagement photos, graduations, and even photos for their own brand, like prom dresses.

What are your plans for the future?
We will be adding additional changing rooms as our current single powder room gets congested with only one changing room. This will help guests be able to change their outfit to get multiple looks or outfits that better fit the room theme. Maybe they want to wear a pink top in our pink room or a black dress in our CD room, etc.

We also have future plans for our lobby and will be adding a display area for a rotating gallery wall, specifically for local artists, we are proud to provide a space for local artists to display their creations.

Additionally, Erika and Christa are currently looking into opening a second location in Florida, hopefully to be opened before the end of the 2021 year.

Finally, we always look forward to changing our room themes. Planning a new room takes months of research and development, usually math (lol) and when the room is finally built, it brings us great joy to watch our customers ooo and aww as they explore the space and get excited about the newest rooms.
