Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Desince.
Hi Gabriel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My artist journey started off in church growing up. The church allowed me to express my writing, photography, poetry, musicianship, and overall creativity. It was like my experimentation ground. I went through periods of my life where one of my artforms overshadowed the other.
Sometimes during seasons and battles with depression, I would focus on one of my talents and use it as a coping skill. Summer of 2020 was when photography became just that. It was out of my depression that I found an outlet through photography that now has turned into a service that many have used over that last year.
My photography has been featured in magazines and various brands in St. Louis. In addition, my poetry and my last book which sold out upon release in 2019 have also had features on platforms like Close Up TV.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
if it ever is a smooth road then I question what I’m learning. The bumps along the way teach me what to avoid going forward. Some of my biggest struggles have been navigating the business components of being an artist.
I had to learn lots of lessons in protecting my work and learning what I need to invest in to make myself and my creativity better and what I don’t need to invest in. Furthermore, staying disciplined in tough seasons that affect mental health like the whole past year of 2020 where we had so many challenges to stay healthy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Photographer and Author, Gabriel has a heart for youth and empowers them in finding their purpose through creative writing, reciting poetry, and sharing messages of authenticity, hope and wellness through life experiences. In his photography, he encourages authentic expression and image positivity which builds his client’s self-esteem.
He created the service Real Imaj with the slogan “creative photography for creative people.” Real Imaj reminds the world that no matter what you are divine because you were created in God’s image. He is known for his philanthropy and service in the community, but also the many talents he has and the way he serves people with those talents.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Comparison is the thief of joy. Don’t try to compete, but be willing to learn what others are doing better than you. In addition, document everything. if it’s not documented, it didn’t happen. Lastly, don’t push your creativity, but make space for it as you practice self-care. The more you are healthy the more you will create.
