Meet Honey Marie of Creve Coeur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Honey Marie.

Hi Honey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started as a kid sneaking into my mother’s makeup like any other little girl. Walking around the house with black lip liner on my lips when she wasn’t home and eventually getting caught and getting in trouble. My Granny used to have all the Jet and Ebony Magazines and I used to enjoying looking through those magazines as a kid and seeing all the beautiful models. As a teenager I would get all the Cosmo and Teen Vogue Magazines and try to copy the makeup trends I would see.

After mastering doing my own makeup, my friends started to ask me to do theirs makeup. I was very unsure about doing makeup on someone other than myself but they had so much confidence in me so I just ran with it. I wasn’t charging any money or officially taking clients, it was just something I enjoyed doing for my friends, In magazines you would always hear about the models and the photographers but not the makeup artist and their stories. Just a tiny credit with their name on the picture or in the back of the magazine, so I didn’t take it serious at the time.

I always saw makeup as a hobby, and I never thought it was something I could make a career out of. If it was not for my family and friends pushing me and believing in me, I don’t think I would be where I am today. I been professionally doing makeup for 6 years. I worked for MAC Cosmetics for a little while and I eventually started working on my own.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were some struggles in the beginning. I had no idea how to start a business or how to attract clients. A majority of my clients were coming to me by referrals from friends and family. I had to learn how to put myself out there and that was very hard for me. I couldn’t expect to attract clients if I didn’t talk to people. Social Media has definitely made it easier to connect with people you may never come across on a daily basis but I can say I have definitely come out of my shell.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a Makeup Artist, I specialize in enhancing the natural beauty within. I am most proud of my growth as an artist. The beauty industry is constantly evolving and while everyone’s standard of beauty is different, I enjoy making my clients feel like their best selves. I always send my clients off with little makeup tips and tricks that they can use at home or even just positive words of affirmation.

I would say what sets me apart from others is I’m always learning, growing and unafraid to step outside the box.

What are your plans for the future?
I want to eventually start my own cosmetic line. My clients are always looking to me for product recommendations and hopefully, in the future, I am able to create some amazing products that they will love.
