Today we’d like to introduce you to Janay Lee.
Hi Janay, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my business during the pandemic of 2020. I was blessed to be able to continue to work during the pandemic but we were on lockdown. I needed a hobby, something physical to do. I’ve always been crafty. I decided to try candle making.
I watched many videos and took lots of notes. Eventually, I brought my first candle kit. At that point, I kinda became obsessed with candle stuff. I would literally make a candle and put it in almost anything!
Once I realized I had a product that I was able to sell I changed my social media accounts, created a website (Www.LoveMyCandles.Shop), and did more research as to how I could sell my products.
I found my local farmers’ market where I’ve made friends and loyal return customers. I’ve been there since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s not easy. Creating and running a small business is definitely challenging but rewarding at the same time.
I would say that my biggest struggle would be balancing my schedule. I have a lot of long nights. Ordering supplies, running a website, creating products, designing labels, posting products, and then selling my products.
The biggest joy that I get from all of this is when people tell me they are still recovering from covid and still can’t really smell but they can smell my products.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a remote worker. So I work from home answering phone calls daily. I specialize in homemade, hand-poured all-natural soy wax candles. All of my candles are poured in small batches.
I’m still a student of candle-making. It’s so much to learn and so many avenues to explore. Always be prepared to learn. Even tho you may think you have a skill mastered technology and times will always change. A highlight in my candle-making journey would be having some of my products available for sale at Schnucks in Kirkwood, MO. At the time I was in business for under a year.
I am most proud of creating loyal and dedicated customers.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My boyfriend and my now 10-year-old son are my helpers.
They help me with mixing scents, unpacking supplies, shipping products, and making deliveries. Also my dad. He’s my number one fan! When I decided, I wanted to make candles he learned how to make them as well!
We would FaceTime and order new products and ship them back and forth since we live in two different states.
