Today we’d like to introduce you to JB Anderson.
JB, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Gaslight Studio & Lounge (@Gaslightstl on socials), was a concept I had from my post-college days, living in Chicago. I have always felt that recording studios, and the recording process, in particular, is one of the most inspiring and creative processes to witness and be a part of. I believed there was an opportunity to combine that experience with one of everyone’s favorite pastimes… eating and drinking! The main feature in our space is a 12′ wide by 7′ tall soundproof glass wall that separates our studio live room and the lounge customers. When activated, artists ranging from local singer-songwriters to national touring acts can be seen and heard in the studio, recording new songs, or versions of their current hits, all while eating and drinking on the other side of the glass.
Gaslight Studio is intended to be an incubator for local artists to obtain high-quality recordings of their music, cheap and or free while presenting it to the local “fanbase” for the first time. The hope has always been to expose local talent to the community and create a more intimate relationship between the two.
Without the passing of my brother and I parents back-to-back in 2014, the business would have never come to fruition. After they both lost their battles to cancer, my brothers and I decided to take a portion of the inheritance and move forward with Gaslight with the purchase & renovation of the building. In their honor, we have consistently donated and comp’d studio time for youth and others in need. Since 2015 we have provided over 3000 hours of free studio & video time to primarily the local music scene, as well as touring acts looking to grind it out. It is what our parents would have liked most out of what we’ve created.
The goal moving forward is to simply continue exposing Gaslight customers to our incredible local talent and help these artists grow and develop their craft in an attempt to compete with other thriving music cities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In spite of it being an idea/concept that virtually every one of my music industry friends and peers felt was crazy, it has in its own weird way been relatively successful. Anytime a new idea comes along that is glaringly opposite of the norm, it is usually attacked first and then accepted over time. Of course, there are individuals that will never record “live” in front of a crowd, for their art and process is best suited in a private environment. We accept that reality… however, we believe that the opportunity to feed off the energy of the room, the fans, the strangers, and still obtain a very high-quality recording, is valuable. The parallel in sports is that few ever practice in private as hard as they play in games in public.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Gaslight Studio is the most unique recording studio in the area, if not the country, in so much that the “secret sauce” is on full display. Music lovers, that happen to enjoy eating, drinking, and socializing, can visit the space and witness the actual creation process in real-time. A sort of “Recording Studio Reality TV” vibe. Early in the process, I knew that video was going to be critical, especially in today’s social media-heavy environment. “The Gaslight Sessions” became, and continues to be, our calling card, with multiple videos surpassing millions of views and creating an “I’ve heard of that place” response from many corners of the country when we travel.
The best thing someone can do to help us continue developing, producing, and promoting local, indie talent, is to follow us on socials (@Gaslightstl) and stop in for a bite and a beer every now and then. One’s free… and the other you do daily!
