Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Harper.
Hi Kayla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Back in 2013, I was a single mom, working full-time and going to school. One day, I randomly had the urge to get crafty, so I hopped on Pinterest and started scrolling some ideas. I came across a DIY coaster set. It looked pretty simple, so I went out, bought the supplies, and made my first set. At the time, I was also in the process of purging and using Facebook Marketplace to sell my items I no longer needed. I decided to post the coasters I had made and they sold within an hour. The rest is history.
What started as a hobby eventually turned into a side business that I was able to operate out of the comfort of my home. I began selling in different Facebook crafting groups, going to craft fairs and eventually started my own Etsy shop. I ventured into multiple different store locations and spent time figuring out what worked best for me, logistically and financially.
Fast forward to today, I still have my Etsy shop, a couple of wholesale accounts, and I’m currently in two local stores: Joys Collective Market in St. Charles, Missouri and RF Home Co in Kirkwood, Missouri. I am still working full-time for an online e-commerce company as the Director of Operations. I also recently graduated from Lindenwood University with my MBA. With school finally behind me, I’m excited to use my extra time to dedicate to the continued growth of my business.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I definitely would say I faced some challenges along the way, but what’s growth without challenges? Being a single mom and working is a challenge within itself, so adding a new business on top of school gave balance a whole new meaning to me. Fortunately, over the years I’ve had an amazing support system through family, friends, and other business owners. There were plenty of tears, breakdowns, and feelings of defeat over the years, but nothing triumphs the feeling of creating a product that people love and knowing your product is being used in households around the world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Coasters & Co., LLC?
Coasters & Co., LLC makes unique coasters out of ceramic tile. The image itself is directly transferred into the tile and the coasters have a full-cork backing on them. I have over 100 of my own designs and have the capability to do custom work as well. They make great gifts for all occasions such as weddings, birthdays, housewarmings, and holidays.
2020 was an extremely hard year for businesses, and I was fortunate enough to be able to see an uptick in support during the pandemic. Because of this, I only felt it was necessary to give back in 2021. Every month of this year, I am donating 10% of my sales to a local non-profit organization.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I think the most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to never lose faith or doubt myself. When you put your mind, heart, and soul into something you’re passionate about, no challenge is too big. Through times of doubt and feelings of giving up, you have to continue to push yourself through it. Don’t be afraid to take chances. Life is too short to be unhappy, so if you find something that makes you happy, go for it! And don’t stop until you get there.
