Meet Kelly Hinman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Hinman.

Hi Kelly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My name is Kelly Adler Hinman. I am the daughter of God, wife of a good and kind man, and mother of four incredibly adorable little human beings. In addition to the three main roles of my life- I am a full-time newborn and family photographer.

How did this all start???

I entered a contest at the age of eight years old when I was in the second grade. I won!! My first photo contest and won!! The prize was my first camera. I haven’t been without a camera since. I started my first business at eight years old. I would take images of the neighborhood kids, sometimes I would give them beauty makeovers first, and then I would take the film to the store have them develop and deliver the images to their parents the next day. (And get paid 1$). By the time I was a junior in high school, I was shooting weddings.

At a very young age, I had such a strong connection to my family and the generations therein. I can remember my great-grandmother having Alzheimer’s. She had no memory of any of us or anything. And once she was gone, there were very few photos of her. Also, my grandfather was from Ireland, and we never saw any pictures of him as a child. The first pictures we ever saw of my grandpa were pictures once he came to the United States and was dating my grandmother.

I have always felt that photos were such an important thing. After all – that is the legacy that we pass on to our children and their children. After shooting weddings for many years, I now strictly “focus” (see what I did there??) on newborns and families. I needed more time with my kids Because let’s face it these guys are growing way too fast.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Although this business is a huge blessing and my absolute dream come true, it has not always been an easy road. Each year has presented its own challenges. But last year, having to shut down during Covid was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced in my career.

But by the grace of God, Irish Eyes opened back up and is thriving better than ever.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main focus is newborns and families. I absolutely LOVE that I get to snuggle babies for a living while giving mom and dad a chance to relax. Watching the babies grow and capturing all their important milestones is such a privilege. One of my absolute favorite things to do is styled family sessions.

I have a beautiful client closet at my studio and can fully style the entire family, which means they don’t have to go out and spend a lot on new clothes they will probably wear once. We provide it all!!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising huh!!??

Let’s go back to the beginning.

Irish Eyes Photography!

When my mom (Maureen – Owner of the wedding side of the business) and I were starting the company we were brainstorming names. We went through all kinds of silly names. But then we really started thinking about how important our heritage is to us and how we would love to honor that.

My grandfather was actually born in Ireland and let me tell you what, he was the greatest! As a young child, I would hear the song “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” and I always thought that had to have been written about my grandpa because no one smiled like him! So Irish Eyes was born.

I will never forget telling him the name of our company and he said he wasn’t sure he thought it was a good idea. I was confused, we were naming it after him! He then told me, “not everyone might like the Irish!” I told him that’s absurd, and here we are!

My grandfather was our biggest fan. He was there every step of the way as we built this business. He passed away almost four years ago and there is not a day that goes by we don’t think of him. He is with me at every single session. My goal with every family I come in contact with is to capture their spirit through their eyes.
