Meet Kyra Lumpkin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Lumpkin.

Hi Kyra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I created Penrose Apothecary as an ode to my late grandmother and as a love letter to the street I grew up on.

A home is very rarely a physical place, but more of the epitome of comfort, acceptance, and peace. Home can be many things to many people. My grandmother and Penrose St. are my definitions of home.

I wanted to create a brand that instantly creates a sense of home and happiness for all that patron Penrose Apothecary.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The life of an entrepreneur is definitely not for the faint of heart.

This has been a tough journey emotionally, mentally, and financially. This lifestyle really does break you down to the very core of who you are and forces you to really trust your own creativity as well as improve and often re-learn things you thought you already knew.

Like many others, I started my business in the middle of the pandemic as a way to earn some sort of income for my family. It was far from easy and extremely unpredictable, which is an area I have since learned to thrive in.

As an entrepreneur and creator, you have to be ready and willing to pivot at a moment’s notice, but there is freedom in that capability that is very empowering.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create eco-luxury perfumery and hand-poured candles. All of the products I create are 100% safe for the body and the air. The scents I create are all from my own devising. I build every scent from the ground up.

My specialty is warmth, as odd as that sounds. When I opened Penrose Apothecary, it was very important that I created a space where people can get away for just a moment and experience something that made them feel warm and welcomed. Creating that space is more important to me than making a sale.

I am always thrilled when a customer lingers for a long time at my booth at a pop-up or slides into my DMs to just talk. That is when I know I have accomplished what I have set out to do.

At that moment, I couldn’t be prouder of what I have built-in Penrose Apothecary.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?

People can support Penrose Apothecary by following and interacting with us on social media. Of course, buying a candle or a fragrance is always helpful!

I am always open to collaborating with other makers. I have collaborated with Slick Body Butter and have made really outstanding products with them.

I have a few really amazing collaborations coming down the pipeline as well. I am all about creating beautiful products in a competition-free zone.

    Penrose Apothecary is quality at it’s finest you can see and smell the culture and pride of her ancestry in every product.
