Meet PC Cordero of CrossFit Trenches

Today we’d like to introduce you to PC Cordero.

Hi PC, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
CrossFit Trenches opened its doors in May 2013. Back in 2012, I was training for my third full Ironman triathlon race. I always heard interesting things about CrossFit so I decided to give it a try. I immediately loved it. It was very challenging but fun at the same time. After I completely my Ironman race in Lake Placid, NY I went back to CrossFit. The owner of the gym I was going to told me they were opening a CrossFit gym in Lake St. Louis, just a couple of miles from my house.

That day, I came home and told my wife they were opening the gym in our area and I wanted to go in with them. She told me, if you have a good feeling about it, go for it! So I texted the owner of the gym saying something along this lines: “This might sounds very random, and I don’t know what’s your situation but I would like to go in with you guys”. 1o min later I got a text back saying, let’s meet for coffee tomorrow. The rest is history, we met and opened Trenches! After a couple of years we bought them out and we are going 8 years strong.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Owning a business is challenging. It definitely has its ups and downs. I’ve learned a lot and it’s a never ending learning experience. I would have to say the biggest struggle has been Covid, just like any other business. We had to close for 2 months, but thanks to our amazing members who supported us and stuck with us we were able to continue. We had to pivot and do things we weren’t doing, like zoom classes, we will program workouts for our members so they can still work out with very little to no equipment to accommodate their needs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about CrossFit Trenches?
CrossFit is defined as a strength and conditioning workout that is made up of functional movement performed at a high intensity level. CrossFit uses safe, effective, and efficient movements similar to those you use every day in life. At Trenches, we offer a 1 hour class where a CrossFit Level-1 certified Coach will guide all athletes from the warm up to the workout, demonstrating the movements for that day, correcting and making sure everyone had a great, but more importantly a safe workout. All our coaches are CF certified and many posses additional certifications, like gymnastics, weightlifting, kettlebell, nutrition, etc. We are constantly seeking for continued education to better ourselves and be able to provide an excellent service to our athletes.

There are many things that make me proud about Trenches, one of them is our amazing community of athletes. The CrossFit Community is totally unique. Our athletes are extremely supportive with each other, we push each other and challenge each other. We also like to have fun doing happy hours and we love to support our local community as well. We are part of “Adopt A Highway” on highway 40, we also organize fundraisers, one to support local organization DASA (Disabled Athletes Sports Association) and another one to support an orphanage in Ecuador.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
We are really good at getting to know out athletes. I think you need to know people at some sort of personal level in order to know how to coach them. We all have different personalities, styles and characters, therefore we can’t coach the same to everyone. Our coaches are great at adapting to those different trades and are successful helping our athletes reach their goals.

The programming of the workouts are extremely important as well. We program every day’s workout tailoring the movements to our audience and to our equipment. CrossFit’s workouts are different than your typical gym routine. Everyday is different, which makes the workouts fun and away from a boring routine.

We also support military and first responder personnel offering membership discounts.
