Today we’d like to introduce you to Rae Dorsey.
Hi Rae, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I always had a passion for photography all the way back in high school. It wasn’t until 10 years later I decided to pick up a camera again.
My husband and I moved to the St. Louis area for his job with our 3-month-old baby girl. In support for my husband’s career but in a struggle to adjust to motherhood I fell into postpartum with the new transition. We had no family here just us. I decided to leave my corporate job to be a stay-at-home mom. While adjusting to my new normal, I needed a creative outlet so I started planning kids’ parties and couldn’t for the life me get someone to take a decent picture of my hard work so I would plan, decorate, and shoot the photography for my events. Talk about crazy! Until I fell in love with photography all over again. It became my safe place! Using that passion, I told myself I was never going back to corporate and I did just that. I’ve specialized in newborn, maternity, boudoir, and weddings over the last four years. Although it hasn’t been easy, I’ve made so many amazing connections with my RAEmarkable clients and vendors friends between the cities of Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Chicago.
I will soon be closing my studio in Indianapolis studio and planting deeper roots in the St. Louis area and I couldn’t be more excited to see where my journey takes me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not smooth at all! I’ve survived two years of the pandemic in the busiest wedding season I’ve ever experienced along with me my other fellow photographer friends.
I’ve suffered great increase and also so major financial setbacks but I honestly wouldn’t trade this life and/or my clients for the world.
I’ve had clients who have been with me from the very beginning and to me that speaks to my love for them and what I do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently specialize in Newborn, Maternity, Boudoir, and Wedding + Engagements. I’ve been known to create amazing experiences for all couples. I’ve taken great pride in highlighting skin tones for my poc and bipoc couples. I’ve been known to accept all couples no matter sex, culture, religion. I take pride in taking pictures of children on the autism spectrum because we have a son of our own who is on the spectrum. No matter what I enjoy people and what I do and helping them to create moments with the people they love or within themselves. I felt like what sets me apart is my ability to create spark in my clients they didn’t know they had. They leave my sessions feeling fulfilled, less stressed, and beautiful no matter what happened before they came in …. they leave remembering the fun they had during a time of a celebration.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
