Meet Sowmya Dharmapuri and Pratyusha Yedma of Your Party Brigade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sowmya Dharmapuri and Pratyusha Yedma.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi! We are Pratyusha and Sowmya, the faces behind Your Party Brigade. What started as a small photo booth back in 2018 for a friend’s housewarming party brought us where we are today. We went to Med school back in India, moved to the Saint louis’ area in 2012. We met through a common friend when we were busy preparing for our residency exams. At that time, we had absolutely no idea of starting a business together. One evening while chit-chatting over chai, we discovered we had a lot more in common be it hobbies, love for art and culture, or decor. Our love for art and decor goes way back, even as kids we would help our mothers with traditional decor during events at home. Growing up we enjoyed watching all the lavish setups and loved celebrations in general. After we had our babies, we were inspired to decorate our homes for events like cradle ceremonies and birthdays. We both love DIY!! We enjoy elegant Indian traditional setups and at the same time we also really love working on themes for birthdays, and now with our kids, we finally have an excuse to do it all.  During one such event, one of our friends asked us if we would like to do traditional Indian decor for her housewarming party. Our husbands suggested we take up the offer. Hesitantly we took up the event, hit a few setbacks but with good teamwork, we ended up decorating their beautiful house. That is how Your Party Brigade started and we haven’t looked back since.

Word of mouth spread real quick and before we realized we had all kinds of events lined up, from baby showers to birthday parties. One year went by quickly. We had the privilege of working with a variety of clients and vendors and gained a good amount of experience in a short span. We were most excited when the Indian association of Saint Louis got in touch with us for the 150 years of the Mahatma event. We pitched our ideas and got the go-ahead signal. The event was spread over three days and had a great turnout of about 3000 people! It was just the kind of advertising we needed. It was a whole lot of work, but I remember sleeping with a smile on my face that night. Soon by the beginning of 2020, we ended up booking parties all the way into September.

. About how we got here, you might call it chance, talent, or sheer hard work, we absolutely love what we do. We have been lucky enough to have husbands that support us through it all and our kids are our little cheerleaders. Creativity for us is a sweet escape from the mundane. No matter how tired you are, at the end of a long day, a good review from the client and the happiness on their faces is worth it all!!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth ride. We had to learn on the go and with our kids being under a year old when we started with no close family around, it was challenging to manage. The first year was a learning curve for us. But we have been lucky enough to have amazing clients, some of whom have now become great friends. Everything was falling into place and then covid hit. But we have decided to take it in our stride. We are working on our skills and making improvements in the downtime that we have right now. We are still nowhere near where we want to be, we have a long road ahead of us, but we are getting there one party at a time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We plan and style any event, keeping our clients’ choices in view. We are a team of passionate individuals who enjoy what we do. We strongly believe that an event should be a reflection of the client’s personality. So, when you are at Your Party Brigade you can be rest assured that your event is going to be unique. All our decorations are highly custom-designed for the client’s wants and needs and we take pride in them. We are extremely detail-oriented and take care of all the minute details. From a simple sketch to the execution a lot of background work goes into making a client’s dream come true. It is very important for us to gain their trust so when we are hired to style an event, we give our everything to it. No matter how big or small the event is, we believe it is our responsibility to take their event planning stress away and make sure they enjoy their event like they should. We specialize in Birthdays, Baby showers, Traditional Indian Ceremonies, Engagements, wedding, and reception decor. We love to cater to traditional Indian ceremonies; at the same time, we absolutely love working on kids’ theme birthday parties. The latter being the category we have worked on the most so far. Kids’ parties are our absolute favorite. We love to see them happy. Be it something as simple as a favorite character standee or an elaborate candy table set up, their little smiles just make our day.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Pratyusha – My favorite childhood memory was putting peacock feathers in the book and hoping they would multiply. I remember being so smitten by the colors in a peacock feather I ended up not doing so well in my math test that day. My mother was concerned about the math scores and ended up talking to the teachers at school. My school principal told Mom, ”I would want a student who would choose a peacock feather over a diamond, she is very creative, do not worry about her math test, she will do good eventually”. This happened around first grade and I cannot forget it ever.

Sowmya – My favorite childhood memories revolve around my birthdays. My parents are both very creative people. They would do their best to decorate the home and I was always in love with how beautiful and colorful they turned out, they also used to plan these little games for us kids and made the parties so much fun. As a kid I remember looking forward to them every year. My love for decor and creativity, you could say I got it from them!
