Rising Stars: Meet Allison S

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison S.

Hi Allison, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In December of 2019, I received a leather earring making kit from my parents for Christmas. After making a few, I decided to make a business out of it, Designs by Allison. I made an Instagram account to display my products. I started small – selling to just my friends and family. A few months had passed and I wanted to expand my business into more jewelry items. So I decided to make charm-based earrings. Those took off quick selling them on my Instagram, and I kept expanding into making necklaces and more. In the middle of 2020, things really took off more. I started adding more products. In July of 2020, I made an Etsy shop and I’m so glad I did. As of now today, I’ve shipped jewelry to almost all 50 states and have made 200 sales just on my Etsy. Today, I’m still continuing to grow my business. I’m participating in my local farmers market this summer and I hope to expand my Instagram following. I’m so lucky and blessed to be so successful as this is such a dream of mine to be a young entrepreneur. Take note, I’m only 17! 18 this summer and still a student as well!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say it’s a huge learning experience for me. Like I said, I’m young and have never done anything like this before so I learn something new everyday! One struggle for me is when I receive a review on my Etsy. If you purchase a product from my shop on my Etsy, after you receive it, you have the opportunity to leave a review. 99% of the time I get a 5 star review and that always makes my day. But there have been a few situations where I didn’t get as good of a review, and it’s frustrating. I reach out to the customer and resolve the situation by providing a refund or sending them something new. One thing I’ve learned is that you can’t please everybody!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a young entrepreneur. I don’t have any other jobs this is my hobby. I am super proud of my creativity and all my accomplishments along the way. I make everything myself. I also like to play around with projects on my cricut machine, I enjoy redoing stuff from the dollar store, thrift store, flipping furniture, etc.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I would say being kind and cooperative. When I package an Etsy order, I always leave a little note thanking the customer for the support. Personally, if I receive a package- I find the little things make my day and it makes the customer feel appreciated. Additionally, you learn to be cooperative with your customer, for instance if you want to keep the customer and not turn them away, you can give them a better price/ deal for the item. And honestly, another big characteristic is just to stay positive! If your month of sales is slow, stay positive and know that next month might be better! I’m always thinking of new ideas to expand my business by not just selling jewelry. I am so passionate about my business and am always looking for new ideas to express my creativity!
